This module enables you to use fractions within your program
Project description
BASIC FRACTIONS MODULE (VERSION 0.0.1)
Developed by Md Mahdi Tajwar Raeed, Bangladesh (August, 2022)
This is a simple module that let's you use fractions in Python for various purposes (e.g. calculations, or displaying data in a cleaner way)

Features
- Convert mixed fractions to improper fractions and vice versa
- Convert fractions to decimals
- Simplify fractions
- Add, subtract, multiply, divide fractions (result comes out simplified)
Reminder
- A mixed fraction is a number that contains a whole number along with a rational number (fraction). For example: 2 1/3
- An improper fraction is a rational number which has a greater numerator than denominator.
- A proper fraction is a rational number which has a smaller numerator than denominator. It can't be converted into a mixed fraction.
Important Note
Not all functions support mixed fractions; use proper/improper fractions unless it allows mixed fractions (this will be elaborated below).
Usage
Initialise the module by writing "from b_fractions import *
This module contains 2 classes:
- normalFraction (for proper/improper fractions)
- mixedFraction (for mixed fractions)
The normalFraction class takes 2 values: Numerator and Denominator (e.g. 2/3)
The mixedFraction class takes 3 values: Whole number, Numerator and Denominator (e.g. 2
1/3)
Here are examples of how to initialise a normal fraction and a mixed fraction:
- fraction_1 = normalFraction (2, 3)
2/3 - fraction_2 = mixedFraction (2, 1, 3)
2 1/3
In order to print a fraction to the screen, write:
fraction_1.show()
IN ORDER TO ACCESS A NUMERATOR OR DENOMINATOR INDIVIDUALLY, WRITE:
- fraction_1.nr (for numerator)
- fraction_1.dr (for denominator)
- fraction_1.w (for whole number if it is a mixed fraction)
Functions
-
The function "normalfraction_to_mixed" takes a single improper fraction object and returns a mixed fraction object.
fraction_3 = normalfraction_to_mixed(fraction_1) -
The function "mixedfraction_to_normal" takes a single mixed fraction object and returns an improper fraction object.
fraction_4 = mixedfraction_to_normal(fraction_2) -
The function "normalfraction_to_decimal" takes a single normal fraction object and returns it in decimal form.
num1 = normalfraction_to_decimal(fraction_2) -
The function "mixedfraction_to_decimal" takes a single mixed fraction object and returns it in decimal form.
num2 = mixedfraction_to_decimal(fraction_2) -
The function "addition" adds 2 IMPROPER/PROPER fractions (doesn't work with mixed fractions). It takes in 2 values.
fraction_5 = addition(fraction_1, fraction_4) -
The function "subtraction" subtracts the first IMPROPER/PROPER fraction by the second one (doesn't work with mixed fractions). It takes in 2 values.
fraction_6 = subtraction(fraction_1, fraction_4) -
The function "multiplication" multiplies 2 IMPROPER/PROPER fractions (doesn't work with mixed fractions). It takes in 2 values.
fraction_7 = multiplication(fraction_5, fraction_6) -
The function "division" divides the first IMPROPER/PROPER fraction by the second one (doesn't work with mixed fractions). It takes in 2 values.
fraction_8 = multiplication(fraction_7, fraction_6) -
The function "comparison" takes in 2 values. It returns 1 if the first PROPER/IMPROPER fraction is greater than the second, and 0 otherwise.
num3 = comparison(fraction_7, fraction_8)
Tip
If you need to add/subtract/multiply/divide 2 MIXED fractions, then simply convert them into improper fractions by using the function "mixedfraction_to_normal". Now you can use these for calculations.
Sample program
from b_fractions import *
f1 = normalFraction(3, 4)
f2 = normalFraction(3, 4)
f3 = addition(f1, f2)
f3.show()
Result: 3/2
