imexam is an astropy affiliated package
imexam is a python package meant as a replacement for the IRAF imexamine task. You should be able to perform all of the important functions that imexamine provided using DS9 as your display device, through a python session. It currently supports communication with DS9 through XPA. Ginga support will be added shortly.
