Python probability distribution sampling and plotting

Project description

pybility is a light-weight python package which calculates and visualizes the common probability distributions (Gaussian, binomial, Poisson), either in a pop-up window or on-screen (directly on the terminal). It is made for the purpose of education and training.

It creates objects each representing a distribution of given type and characteristics. In particular:

  1. For given mean and standard deviation (user input: float, float) it creates the probability density function for a Gaussian distribution.
  2. For given probability and number of events (user input: float in [0,1], integer) it creates the probability mass function for a binomial distribution.
  3. For given event rate (user input: float) it creates the probability mass function for a Poisson distribution.

Moreover, it can read data (either as user input or the default pybility’s data sets or even synthesize data for a Gaussian distribution), calculate the distribution’s characteristics and update the class instance.

Distribution-type objects can be added up or even multiplied (for Gaussian and Poisson) to yield a new distribution object. Distributions’ characteristics can be printed directly by typing object’s name.

Pybility uses matplotlib.pyplot to plot as a pop-up or the drawilleplot library to print on-screen (terminal).

Prerequisites:

  • matplotlib
  • drawilleplot
  • Pillow
  • (optional) Wheel

Installing:

pip install pybility

Examples:

### Gaussian distribution

>>> from pybility import Gaussian
>>> g1 = Gaussian(10, 2)
>>> g1.read_data_file('path/to/file')
>>> # if no file is specified then data can be randomly drawn (synthesize_data = True) from a Gaussian distribution with the given mu and sigma.
>>> # if no data is synthesized then the method will read the default, stored data.
>>> g1.plot_histogram_pdf(synthesize_data = True, in_terminal = True, n_samples = 25)

Issues:

In the plot_histogram() and plot_histogram_pdf() methods, currently, the ‘in_terminal’ variable has the default value False and plots show us pop-ups. If it is manually set to True the distributions are plotted on-screen. If later on it is reset to False the plots will continue being plotted on-screen. The module needs to be reloaded in order to revert the option.

FAQs:

  • Is your package of any use?

    Pybility is developed for demonstration and education purposes. Users can benefit from easy and fast on-screen plots as well as helping with issue-reporting and further developing.

  • Will there be future releases?

    Probably. It’s all about probabilities…
