A package for integrating Robot Framework with Excel using openpyxl and pandas
Project description
ExcelSage Library
ExcelSage is a Python-based library designed for interacting with Excel 2010 and above files in automation testing environments, specifically built for use with Robot Framework. The library provides comprehensive methods for manipulating Excel sheets, cells, rows, columns, and workbooks. This includes reading and writing data, modifying formatting, sheet protection, and more.
Features
- Excel Workbook Manipulation: Open, create, save, and close workbooks, with options for sheet creation, deletion, renaming, and more.
- Cell and Sheet Operations: Read and write to specific cells, manage rows and columns, format cells, and fetch sheet data in various formats (list, dict, or pandas DataFrame).
- Data Management: Sort, find, and replace values, search for duplicates, and merge data from multiple Excel files.
- Security Features: Protect/unprotect sheets and workbooks with passwords.
- Integration with Robot Framework: Easily use the library in Robot Framework for automated testing scenarios.
Installation
You can install the ExcelSage library using pip:
pip install robotframework-excelsage
Documentation
You can find the keyword documentation here.
Python Usage
Here’s a brief guide on how to use the library in your Python projects.

# Open an existing workbook
excel_sage.open_workbook(workbook_name="path/to/excel.xlsx")
# Create a new workbook
excel_sage.create_workbook(workbook_name="new_excel.xlsx", overwrite_if_exists=True, sheet_data=[['Name', 'Age'], ['Alice', 25]])
Fetching Sheet Data
# Fetch data from a specific sheet
data = excel_sage.fetch_sheet_data(sheet_name="Sheet1", starting_cell="D6", output_format="dataframe")
Working with Sheets
# Add a new sheet
excel_sage.add_sheet(sheet_name="NewSheet", sheet_pos=1)
# Delete an existing sheet
excel_sage.delete_sheet(sheet_name="Sheet2")
# Rename a sheet
excel_sage.rename_sheet(old_name="OldSheet", new_name="NewSheetName")
Writing to Cells
# Write a value to a specific cell
excel_sage.write_to_cell(cell_name="A1", cell_value="Test Data", sheet_name="Sheet1")
# Fetch a value from a specific cell
value = excel_sage.get_cell_value(cell_name="B2", sheet_name="Sheet1")
Managing Rows and Columns
# Append a row to the sheet
excel_sage.append_row(row_data=["Mark", "Engineer", 36], sheet_name="Sheet1")
# Insert a column at a specific position
excel_sage.insert_column(col_data=["Name", "John", "Dean", "Sam"], col_index=2, sheet_name="Sheet1")
# Delete a row
excel_sage.delete_row(row_index=5, sheet_name="Sheet1")
Formatting Cells
# Format cell A1 in Sheet1
excel_sage.format_cell(cell_name="A1", font_size=12, font_color="#FF0000", sheet_name="Sheet1", bold=True, bg_color="#FFFF00")
Searching and Replacing
# Find value in a sheet
excel_sage.find_value(value="search_term", sheet_name="Sheet1", occurence="first")
# Find and replace a value in a sheet
excel_sage.find_and_replace(old_value="old_term", new_value="new_term", sheet_name="Sheet1", occurence="all")
Merging and Comparing Excel Files
# Merge multiple Excel files
excel_sage.merge_excels(file_list=["file1.xlsx", "file2.xlsx"], output_filename="merged_output.xlsx", merge_type="multiple_sheets")
# Compare two Excel files
comparison = excel_sage.compare_excels(source_excel="file1.xlsx", target_excel="file2.xlsx", source_excel_config={'sheet_name': 'Sheet1','columns': ['Name', 'Age']}, target_excel_config={'sheet_name': 'Sheet2', 'starting_cell': 'D8', 'columns': ['Name', 'Age']})
Security Features
# Protect a sheet with a password
excel_sage.protect_sheet(password="mypassword", sheet_name="Sheet1")
# Unprotect a workbook
excel_sage.unprotect_workbook(password="mypassword", unprotect_sheets=True)
CSV Export
# Export a sheet to CSV
excel_sage.export_to_csv(filename="source.xlsx", sheet_name="Sheet1", output_filename="output.csv
