NanoCode

NanoCode is a local, provider-agnostic coding agent with a Python backend and a VS Code extension. It can inspect a workspace, propose and apply changes with approval, run commands, show diffs, and undo the last task's file changes.

Terminal agent

After publishing the backend to PyPI, users can install and run the same agent outside VS Code:

pip install nanocode-coding-agent
nanocode-agent --version
nanocode-agent

The current release version is 0.1.0. In the interactive terminal, type /help to see configuration, planning, review, security, session, and undo commands.

Development

Run the backend tests from the repository root:

.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pytest backend\tests -q

Open the extension folder in VS Code and run Run NanoCode Extension to launch an Extension Development Host. In development, the extension installs the adjacent local backend automatically.

Demo release

Build the backend wheel and package the extension:

.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pip wheel . --no-deps --wheel-dir extension\resources\backend
cd extension
cmd /c npm run package

Install the resulting .vsix in VS Code with Extensions: Install from VSIX.... End users need Python 3.9+; the first run installs the backend's third-party dependencies into private extension storage.
