Prerequisites
Before installing the AI Character Framework, ensure you have:
- Python 3.10 or higher
- A virtual environment tool (like
venvorconda) - An API key for your chosen language model (e.g., OpenAI)
- A voice provider API key (e.g., ElevenLabs)
- PyAudio dependencies (for audio processing)
- On Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt-get install python3-pyaudio - On macOS:
brew install portaudio - On Windows: No additional installation needed
- On Ubuntu/Debian:
Installation
-
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/sidu/ai_character.git cd ai_character
-
Create and activate a virtual environment:
python -m venv venv # On Unix/macOS: source venv/bin/activate # On Windows: venv\Scripts\activate
-
Install the required packages:
pip install -r requirements.txt
-
Set up your environment variables:
# On Unix/macOS: export OPENAI_API_KEY="your-api-key" export ELEVEN_API_KEY="your-api-key" # On Windows: set OPENAI_API_KEY=your-api-key set ELEVEN_API_KEY=your-api-key
Quick Start with AICharacterAgent
To quickly get up and running, use the AICharacterAgent class, which provides a simple, batteries-included experience (listen → think → speak loop, greeting support, and callbacks).
- Create a config file (e.g.,
config.yaml):system_prompt: "You are Skullton, a playful skeleton with a mischievous streak." voice_id: "your-elevenlabs-voice-id" greetings: - "Boo! Did I scare you?" - "Welcome to my spooky corner!" enable_vision: false model: "gpt-4o-mini" sampling_rate: 16000 silence_threshold: 10.0 silence_count_threshold: 10
- Run the agent script to start interacting with your character:
python run_agent.py --config ghost.yaml --debug
- The agent will speak a greeting, then listen for your voice input.
- It will generate a response using your chosen language model and speak it aloud.
Configuration
Basic Configuration
The framework uses YAML configuration files to define character behavior. Here's what each core setting does:

Advanced Parameters
| Parameter | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|
duration |
Recording duration in seconds | 1 |
sampling_rate |

ambient_noise_level_threshold_multiplier |
Noise detection sensitivity | 3.0 |
max_file_size_bytes |
Maximum audio file size | 26214400 |
enable_lonely_sounds |
Enable ambient character sounds | false |
enable_squeak |
Enable interaction sounds | false |
Usage Examples
Basic Usage
from ai_character import AICharacterAgent
# Initialize agent with config file
agent = AICharacterAgent("config.yaml", debug=False)
# Run the agent (this handles the listen → think → speak loop)
try:
agent.run()
except KeyboardInterrupt:
agent.stop()
Advanced Usage
This advanced example demonstrates how to extend the AICharacterAgent class to control physical hardware (like a robot). Key features shown:
- Hardware Integration: Shows how to coordinate AI responses with physical movements
- State Management: Demonstrates proper handling of robot positions and states
- Event Handling: Uses the speaking callbacks to synchronize mouth movements with speech
- Resource Management: Proper initialization and cleanup of hardware resources
- Custom Behaviors: Adds gesture system that responds to specific keywords in conversation
You can use this pattern to create your own specialized agents, such as:
- Robot characters with servo motors
- Virtual avatars with animated expressions
- Smart home characters that control IoT devices
- Game characters with in-game actions
