bangla-pdf-decoder

PyPI version Python versions License: MIT

A high-speed, zero-dependency Python engine to decode legacy & hybrid Bengali font encodings (such as VOXLMY+Bangla, Oracle/Crystal Reports exports, Bangladesh Election Commission, Land Ministry, and government gazette PDFs) into clean, standard Unicode UTF-8.

The Problem

When extracting digital Bengali text from government or legacy PDFs using standard PDF libraries (pypdfium2, PyMuPDF / fitz, pdfplumber, pdfminer), the output is often heavily corrupted:

Raw Extracted Text:

Why Existing Converters (bijoy2unicode, avro, etc.) Fail

Existing libraries like bijoy2unicode were designed between 2008 and 2014 for plain text files typed in Microsoft Word using an ASCII keyboard layout (e.g., typing fvUvi $\rightarrow$

However, modern PDF reporting engines generate a hybrid TrueType font subset:

  1. Base consonants and basic vowels are ALREADY Unicode Bengali (U+0980–U+09FF), such as ভ, ট, র, ক, ল, ম.
  2. Compound conjuncts, prefixes, and ligatures are mapped to 16-bit Latin Extended codepoints (U+0080–U+01FF), such as Ģ, Ù, ×, Ô, ÿ, Ï.

When passed to standard Bijoy converters, the collision is disastrous:

Phrase What the PDF Extractor Gives Standard bijoy2unicode Output bangla-pdf-decoder Output
ভোটার Ïভাটার দ্দভাটার ❌ (Ï is Bijoy ASCII for দ্দ) ভোটার ✅
দক্ষিণ দিÙণ দদ্মিণ ❌ (Ù is Bijoy ASCII for দ্ম) দক্ষিণ ✅
ওয়ার্ড ওয়াডÎ ওয়াডত্র ❌ (Î is Bijoy ASCII for ত্র) ওয়ার্ড ✅
অঞ্চল অûল অহুল ❌ (û is Bijoy ASCII for হু) অঞ্চল ✅
ব্যবসা বËবসা বত্তবসা ❌ (Ë is Bijoy ASCII for ত্ত) ব্যবসা ✅

Developers are often forced to resort to OCR (Tesseract), which is 100× slower, CPU/GPU-intensive, and prone to hallucinations.

bangla-pdf-decoder solves this problem at native extraction speed (300+ pages/second) with zero OCR.

Features

  • Exhaustive Ligature Support: Reverse-engineered mapping for 100+ Latin Extended glyphs covering all major Bengali conjuncts
  • Smart Visual Reordering:
    • Converts visual E-kar (Ï) and O-kar sequences back into proper logical Unicode order.
    • Converts visual Reph suffix (Î) back into Unicode prefix (র্).
    • Corrects misplaced pre-base vowels without breaking valid Unicode consonants.
  • Dotted Circle & Nukta Cleanup: Strips orphaned hasants, dotted circles (◌ U+25CC), and invalid sequences.
  • Zero Heavy Dependencies: Pure Python, standard library only (re).
  • Blazing Fast: Over 5,000 records / 300+ pages processed per second.

Installation

pip install bangla-pdf-decoder

Quick Start

1. Simple String Decoding

from bangla_pdf_decoder import decode_bangla_pdf_text

raw = "চূড়াĢ Ïভাটার তািলকা, অûল: চÿগ্রাম, কÔবাজার"
clean = decode_bangla_pdf_text(raw)

print(clean)

2. Integration with pypdfium2

import pypdfium2 as pdfium
from bangla_pdf_decoder import decode_bangla_pdf_text

doc = pdfium.PdfDocument("voter_list.pdf")
for page_num, page in enumerate(doc):
    raw_text = page.get_textpage().get_text_range()
    clean_text = decode_bangla_pdf_text(raw_text)
    print(f"--- Page {page_num + 1} ---")
    print(clean_text)

3. Integration with PyMuPDF (fitz)

import fitz
from bangla_pdf_decoder import decode_bangla_pdf_text

doc = fitz.open("government_circular.pdf")
for page in doc:
    raw_text = page.get_text()
    clean_text = decode_bangla_pdf_text(raw_text)
    print(clean_text)

4. Integration with pdfplumber

import pdfplumber
from bangla_pdf_decoder import decode_bangla_pdf_text

with pdfplumber.open("document.pdf") as pdf:
    for page in pdf.pages:
        raw_text = page.extract_text()
        clean_text = decode_bangla_pdf_text(raw_text)
        print(clean_text)

Command Line Interface (CLI)

bangla-pdf-decoder includes a CLI tool for batch file processing and piping:

# Decode a file to stdout
bangla-pdf-decoder input_raw.txt

# Decode a file and write to an output file
bangla-pdf-decoder input_raw.txt -o output_clean.txt

# Decode via pipe / stdin
cat raw_dump.txt | bangla-pdf-decoder > clean_dump.txt

# Decode inline text
bangla-pdf-decoder --text "চূড়াĢ Ïভাটার তািলকা"

Benchmarks

Tested on an Intel Core i7 (11 worker processes):

  • 106,689 pages processed in 333.14 seconds
  • Average speed: 320.2 pages / second
  • Records throughput: 5,600+ records / second

Testing

Run the included test suite with pytest:

pytest
