What is Colophon?

The Colophon Protocol records every AI-assisted creative transformation as a typed, structured operation in version-controlled history. It produces a machine-readable and human-auditable record of how a creative work was made — which parts were human-authored, which were AI-generated, and how human creative direction shaped the output.

Why?

AI-assisted creative tools produce outputs where human and AI contributions are indistinguishable. The U.S. Copyright Office requires evidence of human creative direction for copyright registration of AI-assisted works. No existing system produces this evidence as a byproduct of the creative workflow.
