Project description

covalent-api-sdk-py

The Covalent API SDK supported for Python. Make sure to use Python 3.7 and above!

The Covalent Python SDK supports all chains across Mainnets and Testnets. List of supported Networks can be found on our Supported Networks page

Name Resolution

The Covalent Python SDK supports address resolution natively allowing an ENS, RNS, Lens Handle or Unstoppable Domains address to be passed in directly for all our endpoints.

Getting started

pip3 install covalent-api-sdk

After installing the app, you can then import and use the SDK:

from covalent import Client
def main():
    c = Client("YOUR_KEY")
    b = c.balance_service.get_token_balances_for_wallet_address("eth-mainnet", "demo.eth")
    if not b.error:
        print(b.data.chain_name)
    else:
        print(b.error_message)

Creating a unique Covalent API Key

To create your own API key, sign up for an Covalent account here and use the key created under the API Keys tab.

How pagination works

Endpoints supporting pagination

  • get_erc20_transfers_for_wallet_address()
  • get_token_holders_v2_for_token_address()
  • get_block_heights()
  • get_log_events_by_address()
  • get_log_events_by_topic_hash()
  • get_chain_collections()
  • get_token_ids_for_contract_with_metadata()
  • get_all_transactions_for_address()

The listed endpoints above are currently the only endpoints that support pagination which return 100 results per page. To get the next page, it uses a link url or the page-number provided in the endpoint response. Here's an example of how to paginate through all recent transactions on the ethereum blockchain for the demo's ENS address:

from covalent import Client
import asyncio

async def main():
    c = Client("YOUR_KEY")
    async for res in c.transaction_service.get_all_transactions_for_address("eth-mainnet", "demo.eth"):
        print(res)

asyncio.run(main())

The paginated endpoints exclusively returns their response items without the response wrapper, enabling developers to access the list seamlessly, ensuring efficient and straightforward item retrieval.

Retry Mechanism

Each endpoint is equipped with an exponential backoff algorithm that exponentially extends the wait time between retries, making up to a maximum of 5 retry attempts only.

Error Handling

The paginated endpoints will throw an error message in this format: An error occurred {error_code}: {error_message}, when an error occurs. The developer would need to make sure to catch those errors if any. This endpoint does not follow our default response format unlike our other endpoints, shown below.

    "data": ...,
    "error": false,
    "error_message": null,
    "error_code": null

Error codes

Covalent uses standard HTTP response codes to indicate the success or failure of an API request. In general: codes in the 2xx range indicate success. Codes in the 4xx range indicate an error that failed given the information provided (e.g., a required parameter was omitted, etc.). Codes in the 5xx range indicate an error with Covalent's servers (these are rare).

Code Description
200 OK Everything worked as expected.
400 Bad Request The request could not be accepted, usually due to a missing required parameter.
401 Unauthorized No valid API key was provided.
404 Not Found The request path does not exist.
429 Too Many Requests You are being rate-limited. Please see the rate limiting section for more information.
500, 502, 503 Server Errors Something went wrong on Covalent's servers. These are rare.

Tests

Ensure you are at the root directory before running any tests

install pytest-env first if you do not have it already

pip install pytest-env

then go to the pytest.ini file in the root director and enter your covalent api key in the COVALENT_API_KEY field then to run all tests, run

pytest

OR run individual tests

pytest tests/test_security_service.py

Documentation

The Covalent API Python SDK documentation is integrated within the source code through pydoc comments. When utilizing an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), the SDK provides generated types and accompanying documentation for seamless reference and usage.
