embodied-ops
Hardware-independent operational workflows for embodied AI.
embodied-ops defines the reusable operational layer that sits above robot and
policy adapters: a consistent CLI vocabulary, collection interaction, task
selection, sample-timing checks, deterministic evaluation, verified artifacts,
and an adapter-driven local Operator Panel with versioned machine-readable
workflow status. The core package has no mandatory runtime dependencies and
does not define a competing robot API.

Scope
| Area | Public contract |
|---|---|
| CLI | Stable INFO/STEP/PASS/WARN/FAIL presentation, shared hardware-check tables, human/JSON dataset reports, and live status lines |
| Collection | Standard session, capture, outcome, and final-summary wording; Enter-to-Start/Save, Discard, and Quit actions; reset-point policy; streaming leading-stillness trimming; portable experiment IDs; sample freshness and pair skew |
| Tasks | Strict create-only JSON prompt catalogs and one number/id/exact-prompt selection flow |
| Evaluation | Stable task/repetition plans, deterministic run slots, and portable progress summaries |
| Artifacts | Atomic publication, exact manifests, verified Hugging Face retrieval, contract digests, and pinned code environments |
| Operator Panel | Versioned catalog, form, event, and workflow-status schemas; packaged shadcn/ui Web presentation; minimal repository adapters; normalized camera health; exclusive owned-process supervision; phase-aware revisioned input gates; typed progress; and format-driven document creation |
| Foxglove presentation | Robot-neutral Collection Console extension, versioned per-layout topic/service state, and fail-closed organization-layout upserts; Runtime adapters retain native telemetry, service authorization, bridge policy, and final layout composition |
| Teleoperation | Source-neutral target, source-status, feedback, command, step, and episode schemas; lossy latest-state PUB/SUB; acknowledged idempotent commands; shared Cartesian clutch mapping and guards; atomic manifests with artifact hashes |
| Dataset interoperability | LeRobot v3 payload-graph validation and a format-only v3-to-v2.1 builder; Runtime callers supply robot task, feature, statistics, and provenance constraints |
The package owns cross-robot operational mechanics only. Robot repositories
still own hardware identities, feature semantics, provenance, readiness gates,
and physical safety. Use the native interface of the framework that owns the
hardware integration, such as LeRobot Robot and Teleoperator. ROS nodes,
drivers, control leases, safety limits, policies, and hardware process
lifecycles remain in those framework or robot-specific packages. The Operator
Panel supervises only the adapter-provided top-level workflow command.
Reusable LeRobot dataset-format mechanics live in
embodied_ops.datasets.lerobot, proven by the Galaxea A1 and VLAI L1 Runtime
integrations. Robot-specific dataset schema, task policy, provenance, and
collection composition remain with each Runtime. See
docs/ARCHITECTURE.md for the ownership rules and the
dependency boundary.
Operator Panel
A robot repository implements the minimal PanelAdapter and owns every catalog
value, command, and hardware decision. The catalog must use the public versioned
schema; reusable field builders leave only choices, labels, and capabilities to
the adapter. Optional camera, configuration, and registration providers add
only the features that repository supports. The generic package serves the same
packaged UI and runs one validated workflow at a time:
from embodied_ops.operator_panel import serve_operator_panel
serve_operator_panel(adapter, bind="127.0.0.1", port=8765)
Child processes may announce guarded input and display-only progress through
announce_input() and announce_progress(). Input announcements identify the
semantic phase and concise operator detail as well as the exact actions accepted
at that gate. See
src/embodied_ops/operator_panel/README.md
for the adapter and presentation contracts.
Operator status and external observability
GET /api/status returns a versioned, read-only workflow snapshot for
non-Web consumers. Each snapshot carries a stable run_id, monotonic
revision, independent input_revision, input phase/detail, lifecycle state,
timestamps, typed progress, and the currently accepted guarded-input actions.
Lifecycle states are idle, running,
waiting_for_input, stopping, stopped, succeeded, and failed.
A robot integration validates and sanitizes that snapshot before mapping it to
a native observability transport. The shared Foxglove Collection Console reads
that sanitized schema-2 JSON from a Runtime-configured ROS String topic and
calls only the five Trigger services supplied in its versioned layout state.
ROS messages, bridge lifecycle, network exposure, topic/service allowlists, and
the mapping itself remain the robot Runtime's responsibility. Status is
observational: the action identifiers it reports do not themselves grant
permission to send input or start work. A robot-specific control adapter must
submit the exact current (run_id, input_revision, action) tuple; stale,
replayed, undeclared, and cross-run actions are rejected.
The dependency-free embodied_ops.foxglove module validates and sanitizes
workflow snapshots, checks native collection actions against the exact current
input gate, builds strict panel state, and upserts committed organization
layouts. The extension source lives in foxglove/collection-console; it
contains no robot identity or default topic. A deployment repository may
package its pinned revision, but the resulting extension should be published
only once per Foxglove organization.
Integrations that need one application owner for Web and a private native
transport can construct OperatorPanelApplication directly, expose only their
allowlisted adapter, and serve the same instance with
serve_operator_panel_application(). Transport authentication, service names,
and safety policy remain outside this package.
The supervisor owns the launched workflow process group and terminates it if the panel server disappears, preventing an apparently stopped control surface from leaving its child process running.
Teleoperation boundary
embodied_ops.teleop defines the common vocabulary between an input-device
adapter, a simulator/robot backend, and read-only observers. It deliberately
does not parse a Quest APK, load calibration profiles, map targets into native
actions, or set robot-specific physical limits. The source publishes the newest
calibrated Cartesian target. Backends may use the shared CartesianTargetGuard
to fail closed on stale/invalid input, reject reacquisition jumps, require stable
recovery frames, and smooth plausible motion; each backend chooses its guard
thresholds and still owns workspace limits, native action conversion, cameras,
and task-specific recording fields. CartesianClutchMapper centralizes the
backend-neutral relative clutch, frame mapping, workspace clamp, and dropout
behavior so simulators do not reimplement those state transitions.
The optional teleop-zmq transport uses PUB/SUB for targets and feedback,
where dropping stale intermediate frames is desirable. Operator commands use
DEALER/ROUTER and return a versioned TeleopCommandResult; a UI must not report
success merely because it sent a request. Duplicate request IDs replay the
cached result without applying an action twice.
Backend recorders write embodied.teleop_step/v1 rows and publish an
embodied.teleop_episode/v1 manifest last. The manifest is the completion
marker: it records operator disposition, training eligibility, termination,
aligned sample counts, byte sizes, and SHA-256 digests for every artifact.
TeleopEpisodeProvenance also summarizes source/session/controller/calibration
identity and disqualifies mixed or regressing streams from training use.
The Web source lives under web/ as a Vite + React + TypeScript application.
It uses checked-in shadcn/ui components and compiles to the dependency-free
package assets served by Python:
cd web
npm ci
npm run build
cd ../foxglove/collection-console
npm ci
npm run build
npm run lint
Atomic artifacts
from pathlib import Path
from embodied_ops import OutputDirectoryTransaction
with OutputDirectoryTransaction(Path("runs/eval-001")) as transaction:
assert transaction.path is not None
(transaction.path / "metrics.json").write_text("{}\n")
transaction.commit()
If the body fails or exits without commit(), the staging directory is removed
and any previous complete output remains authoritative. Once publication succeeds,
transaction.committed remains true even if removal of the displaced backup fails;
that recovery state raises PublishedOutputCleanupError with both paths. Unfinished
staging or backup siblings block reuse until they are inspected. For single files,
create_only_output_file() provides the same build-then-publish flow without
ever replacing an existing path.
Evaluation plans
from embodied_ops import EvaluationPlan
plan = EvaluationPlan(
identifier="fruit-placement",
task_ids=("apple_bowl", "mango_plate"),
attempts_per_task=3,
)
for slot in plan.slots():
print(slot.sequence, slot.total, slot.task_id)
Run metadata may persist slot.to_dict() and later reconstruct the same
task/repetition position without depending on directory order.
