Embedded Web-Application Firewall
Project description
Embedded Web-Application Firewall
What is an eWaf?
An Embedded Web Application Firewall (eWAF) is a security layer that integrates directly into an application's runtime environment rather than operating as an external network appliance or cloud service. Unlike traditional WAFs that sit at the network perimeter as reverse proxies, an eWAF runs within the same process as the application itself, typically as middleware or a module within the application server.

This architecture allows the eWAF to inspect and filter HTTP requests and responses at the application layer with deep visibility into the framework-specific context and business logic. Because it operates within the application runtime, it can enforce security policies with granular awareness of the application's data structures, user sessions, and framework behaviors. The eWAF intercepts traffic after it reaches the host server but before it interacts with the core application code, providing protection against common web threats such as injection attacks, cross-site scripting, and other OWASP Top Ten vulnerabilities.
The embedded nature of an eWAF offers several distinct characteristics. It eliminates the need for separate hardware or virtual appliances, reduces latency by avoiding additional network hops, and simplifies deployment by being packaged as a library or module within the application. This approach is particularly suited for modern development practices, as it can be version-controlled, tested, and deployed alongside the application code. However, it shares the same process space as the application, meaning its availability is tied to the application's health, and it may be more susceptible to tampering if the host server is compromised.
