fresh-fvsbc

fresh-fvsbc is a Python wrapper for the BC variant of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), the individual-tree growth model maintained by the USDA Forest Service. It builds the FVSbc variant from a pinned fork of PyFVS and exposes BC keywords, species and BEC handling, and tidy simulation I/O.

The FVS source is Fortran. fresh-fvsbc does not reimplement the build or the bindings: it pins the fork that owns them and adds the BC layer on top.

Where this sits

FVS Fortran -> fork of PyFVS (build, FFI) -> fresh-fvsbc (BC semantics, tidy I/O) -> femic, ws3, ws4, freshforge
                                                       ^
                                                       |
                                      nemora (synthetic stem populations)
  • Upstream. nemora generates synthetic stem populations from fitted or user-defined distributions. FVS needs a tree list as input, so nemora primes fresh-fvsbc. The bridge lives here, in fresh-fvsbc; nemora takes no dependency on FVS. See ADR 0003.
  • Downstream. femic, ws3, ws4, and freshforge take fresh-fvsbc as a pinned dependency. See ADR 0002.

Status

ROADMAP.md is the plan of record and the only home for status, and the GitHub issues carry the live status. At present P5, release and deploy, is active on feature/p5-release; P0 to P4 are complete.

The BC variant builds, imports, and runs. The recipe is ADR 0004; the patch sets the build needs are banked at notes/reference/; and the numbers are compared against the FVS project's own BC test data in notes/reference/fvsbc-validation.md, with the limits of that comparison stated there.

The first release, 0.1.0, is being prepared. Its notes and its list of known gaps are in RELEASE_NOTES.md; there is no tag and no wheel yet.

How this project works

This project follows the UBC-FRESH dev workflow. Work is planned as phases, tasks, and subtasks in ROADMAP.md, mirrored in GitHub issues, and recorded in CHANGE_LOG.md. The agent operating contract is in AGENTS.md. Read AGENTS.md, then ROADMAP.md, before you change anything.

Quick start

python -m venv .venv
. .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r requirements-dev.txt
python scripts/dashboard.py

scripts/dashboard.py runs every quality gate: lint, format, strict types, tests with the coverage gate, the workflow validator, and the docs build with warnings as errors.

Before the first real modelling case, read notes/reference/deployment-readiness.md. It has the install recipe that works — including the two steps that cost an hour each the first time — what real use will exercise that the tests do not, and where the known blind spots are.

Running a case

The command reads a population file and a keyword set, runs one FVS-BC case, and reports where its outputs are. It needs the built variant; the build recipe is in ADR 0004.

python -m fresh_fvsbc population.json \
  --directory run \
  --species FD --tree-age 60 \
  --keyword STDINFO=712,CHS131,0,200,35,16 \
  --keyword SITECODE=FD,100 \
  --keyword NUMCYCLE=4 \
  --keyword PROCESS \
  --keyword STOP

It exits 0 when the run completed, 1 when the run was attempted and failed, and 2 when the input was wrong before any run. The population file, the keyword fields, and the outputs are documented in docs/usage.rst.

0001 Fork PyFVS as the FVS build and FFI layer
0002 fresh-fvsbc is a standalone package
0003 fresh-fvsbc owns the bridge from synthetic stem populations

fresh-fvsbc builds on two dependencies with their own terms:

  • FVS is produced by the USDA Forest Service and is in the U.S. public domain. It is released without conditions on its use.
  • PyFVS is MIT, copyright 2021 Forest Modeling. fresh-fvsbc depends on the UBC-FRESH/PyFVS fork and does not vendor it. Where a built artifact carries PyFVS code, its notice is retained.

See notes/reference/license-analysis.md for the check and its provenance.
