Project description

Ganit (गणित)

Ganit(गणित) means calculation in Sanskrit. As the name suggests, this is a calculation utility. This is a parser library implemented in python. The library takes as argument an expression, either infix or postfix and evaluates the expression and returns the result. It supports all major mathematical functions. This uses a slightly extended version of Shunting Yard algorithm. You can read more about this algorithm here.

The evaluator can take variables as arguments. So, evaluation of expression like x^2 + y^3 is possible with this library. It can also take an expression as a variable.So, function composition is also supported. Or in other words, nested expression like cos(x^2+y^2)^2 + sin(x^2+y^2)^2 is also possible. Or even evaluation of nested expression like cos(y); y = sin(theta); theta=acos(sin(x)); x = 45 is possible, it actually evaluates cos(sin(acos(sin(45)))) in this case. It starts from the innermost expression and gradually evaluates the outermost.

Apart from evaluating the expression, parser can return prescanned expression. A prescanned expression is the one which converts an expression by changing multiple occurences of +/-. e.g. -2 will be converted to 0-2 and --2 to 0+2 or ---2 to -2 and so on. Similar changes occur for multiple occurences of + as well.

The parser can also return the postfix expression of a given infix expression. e.g. 2 * 4 will be returned as 2 4 *.

Please note that, the logical, trigonometric, algebraic etc. expression group evaluation is not part of original Shunting Yard algorithm. To extend the functionality I had to extend the Shunting Yard Algorithm. So, if the original expression comes with any Logical Expression, the resultant postfix is not a pure result of Shunting Yard algorithm and if you are planning to use the Coverted Postfix Expression to some other Postfix evaluator, please make sure that the evaluator also supports the conversion. Please check Logical Operations subsection for more details on what are all the conversions happen for Infix to Postfix evaluation. On the other hand, if you have any other postfix expression which has characters other than Basic Arithmetic Operators, the expression may fail evaluation. A list of all the supported functions and operators are available in 'Supported functions' section.

Usage

pip install

The module can be installed using pip with the following command-

$ sudo pip install ganit

Download Source Code

The source code can be downloaded and the parser can be called directly in program.

Once the package is downloaded, you can use the main Parser module from the package and use it in your application.

# import the library and the main parser module
from ganit import Parser
# Create an object of the parser
p = Parser()
print(p.prescan("2 * 4")) # It will print '2*4'
print(p.convert("2 * 4")) # It will print '2 4 *'
# Evaluate the expression
print(p.evaluate("2*4")) # It will print '8'

Evaluation

The library can be used for 3 different tasks -

  • Prescanning of an expression
  • Conversion of infix notation to postfix notation
  • Evaluation of Infix/Postfix expression

The library gives 5 predefined variables -

  1. e - Euler's Number
  2. pi - π
  3. tau - τ, the circle constant equal to 2*π, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its radius.
  4. True - boolean True value to work with logic expressions. If any expression tries to do any mathematical operation on True, it is treated as 1. So, 1+True results in 2.
  5. False - boolean False value to work with logic expressions. If any expression tries to do any mathematical operation on False, it is treated as 0. So, 1+False results in 1.
  6. now - gives datetime object which has value of now, returns the current timestamp
  7. today - gives date object which has value of today, returns the current date

Prescanning of Expression

If an infix expression is not properly embraced, finding the difference between negation and subtraction is difficult during infix to postfix conversion. So, before processing an infix notation, the library checks for occurences of minus/plus signs and tries to find what purpose the sign is serving. Below are some conversions happened during prescan-

  • '-2' is changed to '0-2'
  • '--2' is changed to '0+2'
  • '---2' is changed to '0-2'
  • '(-2)' is changed to '(0-2)'
  • '4*-7' is changed to '4*(0-7)'

Similar logic is also applied for multiple occurences of '+' sign as well. This method also converts all the two character operators to single character operator for shunting yard algorithm to work properly, e.g. '==' converts to '='. Please check the 'Test' section for more details.

The argument of prescan is the expression to be evaluated. A 'dict' object can also be passed as argument, which has a key "exp". The "exp" key of the 'dict' object holds the expression.

This method does not check for validity of the expression. e.g. If you pass an expression with a variable and the variable is not passed, the method still succeeds and returns a changed expression.

Following are some examples of prescan

from ganit import Parser
p = Parser()
# prescan the infix expression
print(p.prescan("2 * 4")) # It will print '2*4'
# passing dict as expression
d = {"exp": "2 * x"}
print(p.prescan(d)) # It will print "2*x"
print(p.prescan(2)) # It will print "2"
print(p.prescan(3.14)) # It will print "3.14"

Conversion of Infix to Postfix

Before evaluating any expression, parser converts any infix notation to postfix notation, thus making the processing easier.

This uses a slightly extended version of Shunting Yard algorithm. You can read more about this algorithm here

The convert method takes 2 arguments -

  1. The required exp argument, which can be either an 'int' or 'float' or 'str' object (where you do not need to pass any variables) or a 'dict' object containing keys "exp" and "variables".
  2. In case the first argument is 'str', a 'dict' object with all the variables can be passed to it. If the first object is 'dict' object, the second argument is ignored.

This method checks the validity of the passed infix expression but does not evaluate it.

from ganit import Parser
p = Parser()
# Convert only numeric or predefined variables like e, pi and tau
print(p.convert("2 * 4")) # It will print '2 4 *'
d = {"exp": "2*x", "variables": {"x":2}}
print(p.convert(d)) # It will print '2 x *'
print(p.convert(d, {"y": 2})) # It will print '2 x *'
d = {"exp": "2*x", "variables": {"y":2}}
print(p.convert(d)) # It will throw error as the variable 'x' is not passed as variable
print(p.convert(d, {"x": 2})) # It will also throw an error, as the first object is of type dict, so second argument is ignored.
print(p.convert("2*x", {"x": 2})) # It will print '2 x *'
print(p.convert(2)) # It will print '2'
print(p.convert(2, {"x": 2})) # It will print '2'. The second argument is ignored.
print(p.convert("2 * pi")) # It will print '2 pi *'

Evaluation of Infix/Postfix expression

The actual evaluation happens here.

The evaluate method has 3 arguments -

  1. The required exp argument, which can either be an 'int', a 'float' or a 'str' or a 'dict' object containing "exp", "variables", "convert" as keys. The expression passed to this method can also be a postfix notation.
  2. The second argument is a 'bool' value. This determines if the expression needs to be first converted to a postfix nontation or not. If an postfix notation is passed, this variable should be passed as False. The default value is True. If the first argument is of type 'dict', this value is ignored, even if passed.
  3. If the first argument is 'str', a 'dict' object with all the variables as keys can be passed to it. If the first object is 'dict' object, this argument is ignored.

This method checks the validity of the passed postfix expression first, then proceeds with evaluation. If postfix notation is wrong, it does not perform any calculation.

Evaluation can be done in nested fashion. So, an expression can contain a variable which in turn is another expression and the pattern go infinitely (or, till stack supports).

from ganit import Parser
p = Parser()
print(p.evaluate("2 * 4")) # It will print '8'
print(p.evaluate("2 * x")) # It will throw error
print(p.evaluate("2 * x", {"x": 2})) # It will print 4
# A postfix notation is passed as argument
print(p.evaluate("2 x *", False, {"x": 2})) # It will print 4
# Nested Expression
d = {"exp": "2 * x", "variables": { "x": {"exp": "2*y", "variables": {"y": 3}} }}
p.evaluate(d) # it will print '12'
# Nested postfix expression
d = {"exp": "2 * x", "variables": { "x": {"exp": "2 y *", "convert": False, "variables": {"y": 3}} }}
p.evaluate(d) # it will also print '12'

Variable naming restriction

This evaluator works on shunting yard algorithm. But the basic shunting yard algorithm does not have very extensible support for operators spanning more than 1 character and also do not support different mathematical functions (such as, log, sin, cos etc). So, to add these functionality, the algorithm has been extended a little bit to suit these needs. Most of the two character logical expressions are internally converted to use single variable. So, apart from the basic arithmetic operators and mathematical function names, we reserve some characters for this conversion and these characters can also be not used as variable names for the expression. Following is the complete list of characters and function names, that are being used internally in some or the other ways.

Variable names are case sensitive. So, x is not same as X or vice versa.

Supported functions

Basic Arithmatic Operations

  1. + : Addition.
  2. - : Subtraction.
  3. * : Multiplication.
  4. / : Division.
  5. % : Modulus.
  6. ^ : Power.

Algebraic Operations

This section defines all the supported algebraic functions supported by the library. The functions are a thin wrapper over python Math library.

  1. abs : this function takes only one parameter and returns the absolute value of the parameter passed. e.g. abs(-2) = 2, abs(2) = 2
  2. ceil: this function takes only one parameter and returns the smallest integer value greater than or equal to the argument. e.g. ceil(-2.8) = -2, ceil(2.8) = 3
  3. floor: this function takes only one parameter and returns the largest integer value less than or equal to the argument. e.g. floor(-2.88654) = -2, floor(2.8) = 2
  4. round: this function takes two arguments and returns a floating point number that is a rounded version of the specified number, with the specified number of decimals. The first argument is the number to be rounded while the second argument specifies the number of decimals to be presented in the rounded number. If the second argument is 0, it returns the rounded integer.
  5. factorial: this function takes one integer argument and returns the factorial of the argument. If the specified number is not integral or negative, raises error.
  6. gcd: this function takes two integers and returns the greatest common divisor of the integers a and b. If either a or b is nonzero, then the value of gcd(a, b) is the largest positive integer that divides both a and b. gcd(0, 0) returns 0.
  7. exp: this functions takes one arguments and returns e raised to the power of the argument, where e = 2.718281…; is the base of natural logarithms. This is usually more accurate than e^x or pow(e, x), where is the argument.
  8. pow: this function takes two arguments and returns the result of first argument raised to the second argument. e.g. pow(3,2) return 9
  9. sqrt: this function takes positive number argument and returns the square root of the argument. e.g. sqrt(9) returns 3. If the specified number is negative, this function raises error.
  10. log: this function takes one argument and returns the base-10 logarithm of the argument.
  11. ln: this function takes one argumetn and returns the natural logarithm of the argument (to base e).
  12. log2: this function takes one argument and returns the base-2 logarithm of the argument
  13. Log: this function takes two arguments and returns the logarithm of the first argument to the given base specified in second argument, calculated as log(x)/log(base).

Trigonometric Operations

  1. sin: takes an argument and returns the sine of the argument expressed in radians
  2. cos: takes an argument and returns the cosine of the argument expressed in radians
  3. tan: takes an argument and returns the tangent of the argument expressed in radians
  4. asin: takes an argument and returns the arc sine of the argument, result is in radians
  5. acos: takes an argument and returns the arc cosine of the argument, result is in radians
  6. atan: takes an argument and returns the arc tangent of the argument, result is in radians
  7. sinh: takes an argument and returns the hyperbolic sine of the argument
  8. cosh: takes an argument and returns the hyperbolic cosine of the argument
  9. tanh: takes an argument and returns the hyperbolic tangent of the argument
  10. asinh: takes an argument and returns the inverse hyperbolic sine of the argument
  11. acosh: takes an argument and returns the inverse hyperbolic cosine of the argument
  12. atanh: takes an argument and returns the inverse hyperbolic tangent of the argument
  13. hypot: takes two arguments and returns the Euclidean norm, sqrt(x*x + y*y). This is the length of the vector from the origin to point (x, y).

Angle Unit Conversions

  1. deg: takes an argument (in radians) and converts angle from radians to degrees.
  2. rad: takes an argument (in degrees) and converts angle from degrees to radians.

Logical Operations

  1. ? : : Ternary expression, this works pretty much like if else statement. If there is no need of an else statement, the : operation can be removed. But the : operation can only be used with ?. So, any expression containing : but not containing ? will throw an error. The use of this expression is as follows -
<Condition>?<Statement to be evaluated if condition is True>:<Statement to be evaluated if condition is False>

Or, you can remove the else part by removing :

<Condition>?<Statement to be evaluated if condition is True>

But the following will cause an error.

:<Statement>
  1. >: Greater than.
  2. <: Less than.
  3. >=: Greater than Equal check. Checks if left hand side of the operator is greater than or equal to the right hand side of the operator. This operator is converted to @ internally.
  4. <=: Less than Equal check. Checks if left hand side of the operator is less than or equal to the right hand side of the operator. This operator is converted to # internally.
  5. |: Or operation. This operator performs logical or operation of two operands. Please note that, this operator does not work as short circuit operator. So, both the operands will be evaluated regardless of whether the first operand evaluates to True or False. And this operator only works for boolean operands.
  6. &: And operation. This operator performs logical and operation of two operands. Please note that, this operator does not work as short circuit operator. So, both the operands will be evaluated regardless of whether the first operand evaluates to True or False. And this operator only works for boolean operands.
  7. !: Inversion operation. This operator inverses the given expression. e.g. !True evaluates to False and the vice versa. This operator is converted to ~ internally.
  8. =: Equality check. This operator performs equality check on the operands. Operands can be float, int or boolean.
  9. ==: Equality check. This operator performs equality check on the operands. Operands can be float, int or boolean. The same operation is repeated in two different operators keeping mind the general programming language constructs. == is more used than = for equality check.
  10. !=: Non-equality check. This operator performs non-equality check on the operands. Operands can be float, int or boolean.
