How to Install FFmpeg on Linux, Mac, and Windows
FFmpeg is a powerful and flexible multimedia processing tool that can handle a wide range of tasks, such as video and audio conversion, streaming, and recording. In this guide, we will show you how to install FFmpeg on Linux, Mac, and Windows operating systems.
Linux
Ubuntu and Debian-based distributions
- Update the package lists for upgrades and new package installations.
sudo apt update
- Install FFmpeg using the following command:
sudo apt install ffmpeg
Fedora
- Install FFmpeg using the following command:
sudo dnf install ffmpeg
Arch Linux and Manjaro
- Install FFmpeg using the following command:
sudo pacman -S ffmpeg
Mac
Using Homebrew
If you don't have Homebrew installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the official Homebrew website.
Update Homebrew to ensure you have the latest package information:
brew update
- Install FFmpeg using the following command:
brew install ffmpeg
Using MacPorts
If you don't have MacPorts installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the official MacPorts website.
Update MacPorts to ensure you have the latest package information:
sudo port selfupdate
- Install FFmpeg using the following command:
sudo port install ffmpeg
Windows
Using Chocolatey
If you don't have Chocolatey installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the official Chocolatey website.
Open an elevated Command Prompt (run as Administrator) and install FFmpeg using the following command:
choco install ffmpeg
Using Scoop
If you don't have Scoop installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the official Scoop website.
Open a PowerShell terminal and install FFmpeg using the following command:
scoop install ffmpeg
After following these steps, FFmpeg should be installed on your system. You can check the installation by running the following command in your terminal or command prompt:
ffmpeg -version
This will display the FFmpeg version and build information, confirming that the installation was successful.
🔐 Authentication
You have two options to authenticate:
Option 1: Browser-based (recommended)
kodekloud dl --browser -o . "https://kodekloud.com/courses/..."
Auto-launches Chrome, you sign in once, and the token is extracted automatically.
Requires pip install "kodekloud-downloader[browser]".
Option 2: Cookie file
Use Get cookies.txt LOCALLY or a similar extension to export cookies after signing in at kodekloud.com. See Authentication section below for detailed steps.

For automatic browser-based cookie extraction (avoids manual cookie setup):
pip install -U "kodekloud-downloader[browser]"
You can also install the latest main changes:

Prerequisites
- Python 3.8 or higher
- uv (fast Python package manager)
Setup
Clone the repository and install dependencies:
git clone https://github.com/debakarr/kodekloud-downloader.git
cd kodekloud-downloader
uv sync --group dev
Code Quality
This project uses Ruff for linting and formatting:

Authentication
Option A: Browser-based (recommended, automatic)
If you installed with [browser] extras, use the --browser flag to extract the
session token directly from your running Chrome browser:
# 1. Start Chrome with remote debugging enabled:
chrome.exe --remote-debugging-port=9222
# 2. Sign in at https://learn.kodekloud.com
# 3. Run the downloader:
kodekloud dl --browser -o . "https://kodekloud.com/courses/..."
The tool connects to your running Chrome via the DevTools Protocol and extracts the
HttpOnly session-cookie automatically. No manual cookie file editing needed.
The session-cookie is refreshed ~every hour — just re-run with --browser.
Environment variable: You can set
KODEKLOUD_USE_BROWSER=1to make--browserthe default behavior without passing the flag each time.
Option B: Cookie file (lightweight, no extra deps)
Export cookies from kodekloud.com after signing in. Use a browser extension like
Get cookies.txt LOCALLY
and save to kodekloud.com_cookies.txt.
KodeKloud uses an HttpOnly session cookie (session-cookie) for API auth.
Standard export extensions cannot capture HttpOnly cookies, so you need to add it
manually:
- Open DevTools (
F12) on learn.kodekloud.com - Go to Application → Storage → Cookies →
https://learn.kodekloud.com - Find
session-cookie, copy its Value (a long JWT token) - Append this line to your cookie file (replace
<VALUE>):.kodekloud.com TRUE / TRUE 0 session-cookie <VALUE>
The session-cookie expires after ~1 hour. When you get a 401 error, repeat steps 1-4.
Tip: Install with
[browser]extras and use--browserto skip all manual steps.

📚 Usage
After installing the package, you can use the kodekloud dl command to download courses:
kodekloud dl --help
Usage: kodekloud dl [OPTIONS] [COURSE_URL]
Options:
-q, --quality [360p|480p|540p|720p|1080p]
Quality of the video to be downloaded.
-o, --output-dir TEXT Output directory where downloaded files will
be store.
-c, --cookie TEXT Cookie file exported from browser.
--browser Extract session token from running Chrome
(requires playwright).
-mdc, --max-duplicate-count INTEGER
If same video is downloaded this many times,
then download stops
--help Show this message and exit.

--help Show this message and exit.
Here is an example:
kodekloud dl-quiz -o KodeKloudQuiz
or download seperate markdown file.
kodekloud dl-quiz -o KodeKloudQuiz --sep
To convert the quiz markdown to PDF you can use any online PDF converter like aconvert, or md2pdf. You can also use grip. Or you can also create a GitHub Gist and then use your browser to convert the page into PDF.

Troubleshoot
If you are getting the below message while downloading course, make sure you have the proper plan.
requests.exceptions.HTTPError: 403 Client Error: Forbidden for url
If you are getting a 401 error, your session token has expired. Solutions (preferred first):
- Use
kodekloud dl --browser(automatically refreshes the token) - Re-export your cookies and add the
session-cookiemanually (see 🔐 Authentication section)
