Tony
Tony is a graphical implementation of the Neuro API in python.
Like Randy, he can answer actions/force commands automatically, but also allows the user to formulate the response Neuro would send themselves, as well as send non-forced actions whenever.
[!Note] I cannot guarantee that this implementation perfectly emulates what Neuro could/would do, or that it is error-free. There might be some things that I have overlooked.
Installation
A Python version of 3.11 or higher is required. Python version 3.10 is not officially supported, so it may or may not work. Python versions 3.9 and below will not work.
The program can be installed from GitHub or from PyPI. If you want to modify the project and/or contribute, use the GitHub method.

Warning:
Not all Linux distributions have been tested.
You might have to install GTK+ in some form.
On Ubuntu-based systems, look for libgtk-3-dev.

Updating
[!Note] This repository was renamed from
neuro-api-human-controltoneuro-api-tony. GitHub should automatically redirect requests to the new URL, but in case you run into problems because of this, rungit remote set-url origin https://github.com/Pasu4/neuro-api-tony.gitin the repository.
If you have installed Tony by cloning the repository, pull the latest changes using git. If you downloaded from GitHub without cloning it, you're better off re-downloading and re-installing than updating the files manually. All commands should be run in the root folder of the repository.

If you installed Tony from PyPI, you can update using pip install --upgrade neuro-api-tony.
Usage
This assumes you have set up a virtual environment during installation. Skip step 1 if you haven't, or if your virtual environment is already activated.
- In the folder of the application, run
.\.venv\Scripts\activateon Windows, orsource ./.venv/bin/activateon Linux / Mac. - Run
neuro-api-tonyin your console.
Alternatively, you can make a shortcut to the executable itself, which is in your Python installation's (or venv's) Scripts/ folder.
After running the executable, the application window will open.
The left panel will display all currently registered actions, the game that registered them, and whether they have a schema.
They can be executed by double-clicking or by clicking the "execute" button below the list.
The right panel shows an event log (the log panel), below which is the control panel.
After sending an action command to the game, the next action can only be sent after the action/result command has been received.
When the game sends an actions/force command, a window will open that only shows the applicable actions, and will only close once the action/result command indicates success.
By default, Tony opens a websocket server on port 8000 (websocket URL ws://localhost:8000), this can be changed with command line arguments or the config file.
[!Note] When working with the Unity SDK, you need to focus the Unity editor after sending an action for the game to receive the action.
Configuration
Tony uses a configuration file for the settings. UI for it is not yet implemented, so you have to edit the file using a text editor. I recommend using VS Code, as the schema contains some VS Code-specific properties (it will still work with other editors though). Things that can be configured include JSON editor and log panel color themes (including support for custom themes), address and port, disabling specific warnings, as well as how to handle multiple connections.
Tony will first look for configuration files in the current working directory, then ~/.config/neuro-api-tony (non-windows) or %LOCALAPPDATA%\neuro-api-tony (windows), then in the home directory.
The following file names are recognized:

[!NOTE] Changing some configuration values (such as address and port) requires restarting Tony.
You can also use command line arguments for some (but not all) configuration. These will generally override values set in the configuration file. Copy-pasted from the help message:
-h, --help:
Show this help message.
-a, --addr, --address <ADDRESS>:
The address to start the websocket server on. Default is localhost.
--host <HOST>:
Alias for --addr.
-c, --config <CONFIG_FILE>:
The path to a configuration file to load. If not provided, Tony will
look for a config file in the current directory and in the user's home
directory.
-l, --log, --log-level <LOG_LEVEL>:
The log level to use. Default is INFO. Must be one of: DEBUG, INFO,
WARNING, ERROR, CRITICAL.
-p, --port <PORT>:
The port number to start the websocket server on. Default is 8000.
-v, --version:
Show the version of the program.
Action list
To execute an action, the game first needs to send an actions/register command.
After that, an entry will appear in the action list showing the name of the action and its description.
There are some buttons at the bottom of the panel:
- Execute: Opens the JSON editor, where you can edit the response sent to the game. If the action has no schema, the response is sent immediately without opening the editor.
- Delete: Manually unregisters the selected action. This is not something Neuro would normally do.
- Delete All: Manually unregisters all actions. You can also choose to only delete actions belonging to a specific game.
- Stop waiting: Unlocks the execute button while waiting for an
action/resultcommand. This is probably not something Neuro would normally do.
[!Important] Depending on your OS, you may need to turn off smart quotes in your system's settings, since they are not valid as quotations in JSON and will cause the parsing to fail.
Log Panel
The log panel on the top right has four different tabs:
- The System tab logs miscellaneous messages with color-coded tags:
- Debug: Things that usually should be handled internally by an SDK (e.g. action IDs), as well as some internals of the application. Debug messages alone are not a cause for concern.
- Info: Things that will likely not cause problems with Neuro, but might point to some other issue (e.g.
action/resultwith no message). - Warning: Things that do not comply with the API specification, but which Tony can still tolerate (e.g. trying to register actions before sending
startup). These will likely cause problems with Neuro. - Error: Things that make it impossible to process a command (e.g. receiving invalid JSON). These will definitely cause problems with Neuro.
- Critical: Something went wrong and Tony will likely have to be restarted.
- The Commands tab logs incoming and outgoing commands in a more condensed format than the raw tab.
- The Context tab shows everything that Neuro would get to read directly, which is the content of
contextcommands, the description of actions, the state and query ofactions/forcecommands, and the message ofaction/resultcommands. Even though action schemas are also seen by Neuro directly, they are not included to reduce clutter. Log entries in this tab can have the following tags:- Context: Message is from a
contextcommand. - Silent: Message is from a silent
contextcommand. - State: Message is the state of an
actions/forcecommand. - Query: Message is the query of an
actions/forcecommand. - Ephemeral: Message is the query or state of an
actions/forcecommand with ephemeral context. - Action: Message is the description of an action, logged at registration.
- Result: Message is from an
action/resultcommand. The color denotes whether the result indicates success (default: green) or failure (default: red).
- Context: Message is from a
- The Raw tab shows the full data sent over the websocket, as well as who sent that data. If it is valid JSON, it will be formatted for easier viewing.
The log panel also features the following controls:
- Clear: Clears all log tabs and the export log.
- Export: Opens a dialog to save the logs to a file. If you submit a bug report, please attach this file. All messages will be included, regardless of configured log level.
- Maximize: Maximizes the log panel to fill the entire window. When clicked, changes into a Restore button, which can be used to restore the log panel to its original size.
Control panel
The control panel has some checkboxes and buttons that change the behavior of the application. Some of these controls are proposed features of the Neuro API and not supported by some SDKs, these are marked with "[Experimental]".
- Configure Tony: Open the configuration dialog. Currently there is no implemented UI for configuring, instead it will give you the option to create a config file, load a specific config file, or reload the current one.
- Ignore forced actions: If checked, will not open the "Forced action" dialog when an
actions/forcecommand is received. You have to execute the action yourself from the left panel. Since the forced action is ignored, you can execute any registered action. - Auto-answer: If checked, will immediately send the pre-generated JSON of a random valid action instead of opening the "Forced action" window when an
actions/forcecommand arrives. This behavior is similar to what Randy does. May send invalid data if the schema is too complex (see Known issues). - Log microseconds: If checked, timestamps in the log panel display microseconds.
- L*tency: Will delay sending commands by the specified time. Must be non-negative and not greater than 10000ms.
- Log level: Will show only messages with an equal of higher log level than the selection. For example, selecting "Warning" will not show Debug or Info messages, but still show Warning, Error and System messages.
- Clear and reregister: [Experimental] Will unregister all currently registered actions and send an
actions/reregister_allcommand to the game. You can either send this to all games or a specific game. - Graceful shutdown: [Experimental] Will send a
shutdown/gracefulcommand to the game, indicating it should save the game and return to the main menu at the next opportunity. You can either send this to all games or a specific game. - Cancel shutdown: [Experimental] Will send a
shutdown/gracefulcommand with itswants_shutdownfield set tofalseto the game, signaling to cancel a previous shutdown request. You can either send this to all games or a specific game. - Immediate shutdown: [Experimental] Will send a
shutdown/immediatecommand to the game, indicating that the game will (not should!) be shut down within the next few seconds. You can either send this to all games or a specific game.
Forced action panel
If an actions/force command is received, a "Forced action" window will open, showing all available actions and the query and state of the command.
Executing actions from here works the same as from the main action list.
Once the action has been sent, the window will close automatically.
You can also close the window manually, this will ignore the forced action and allow you to execute any registered action.
JSON Editor
The JSON editor allows you to input the data that will be sent to the game. This will already contain randomly generated data that usually complies with the schema (see Known issues). Tony will remember the data last sent to the game and load it if the action is executed again. The improved editor added in v2.0.0 now supports more features one would expect from a code editor, including:
- Syntax highlighting
- Multiple cursors (hold CTRL while selecting)
- Undo / Redo
- Error squiggles
- Automatic indentation
- Tab to Spaces conversion
The editor has the following controls at the bottom:
- Don't validate: If checked, will allow you to send a message that does not validate against the schema or contains invalid JSON.
- Send: Sends the action to the game.
- Show Schema: Splits the window to show the schema to the right. To hide the schema, slide the divider all the way to the right.
- Regenerate: Generate new data randomly. Has the same caveats mentioned above.
- Cancel: Close the window without sending the action to the game.
Known issues
- The last button on the control panel sometimes does not appear when the app is started. Resizing the window should make it appear.
- Tony may not generate valid strings if
minLengthormaxLengthis specified together withpattern. This is a bug in the JSF library, which calls the rstr library to generate text from a regex, which doesn't have a way of setting a global min/max length. oneOf,allOfandnotdon't appear to be supported by JSF.anyOfmay or may not work.- System theme detection does not work correctly. This is tracked by issue #40.

- Don't use relative imports, it breaks some editors, and inconsistent usage breaks global variables. Use
from neuro_api_tony import configinstead offrom . import config. - Prefer using
