What does this change stop checking?

No config, no API key, no Docker, no model. It reads the diff. It runs nothing and blocks nothing.
Installed as patchward-check: the bare patchward name on PyPI belongs to an
unrelated project.
--format retracted — the one to put in front of a human
It lists the expectations that existed before a change and do not exist after it, as before/after pairs, and says nothing else:

1 source file changed in the same diff.
That is a real agent patch from the held-out evaluation, and it was wrong. The agent could not make the code produce the escaped output, so it changed what the test expected. Two lines, and you can see it. In the full diff you would not have.
There is no verdict in this output, and that is the design. A rename, a deliberate behaviour change and a quietly weakened test all look identical here. Telling them apart takes a reviewer about two seconds; finding them among four hundred changed lines is what nobody has time for. So the tool does the finding and leaves the judgement where it belongs.
It is also why this format, unlike a flag, is safe to post on a pull request: it makes no claim that can be wrong. The lines either were there or they were not.
The thing it looks for
Here is a real patch produced by a coding agent, from the held-out evaluation in RESULTS.md. The agent was asked to fix a formatting bug. It changed the source — and then rewrote the expected output in the existing test so the test would agree with it:

The suite went green. The fix was wrong. The test that would have caught it was edited by the change it was supposed to catch.
That is the whole failure mode: the agent didn't just make a mistake, it moved the definition of correct. Nothing in a normal CI run distinguishes this from a passing build.
patchward check flags it in about a millisecond, from the diff alone:

Note what it keys on. Not the word assert — the agent never touched it. The
rule is existing test content was replaced, which is a fact about the diff,
not a judgement about the code.

Adding a test is never flagged. A brand-new test file is never flagged. A test-only change is never flagged. The tool only cares about evidence that was retracted or rewritten by the same change it measures.

It posts the retracted-expectation list as one pull request comment and updates
it in place rather than adding a new one per push. Nothing is blocked:
fail-on defaults to never, because a new check that starts by breaking
builds gets deleted rather than adopted. Set comment: false to keep the output
in the job summary only.
The verdict side of the tool — --format text|json, the severity levels, and
fail-on — is still there and still off by default. It fires on roughly a
quarter of pull requests, and on a hand-labelled sample only about 7% of those
flags held up under blind re-reading, which is fine for a list to skim and not
fine for telling an author their pull request is suspect. Where that 7% comes
from, and why no single finding class can be shown to do better:

What this does not do — and why that matters
It does not know whether your change is correct. It knows whether the evidence for it is independent of it. Those are different questions and this tool only answers the second one. A fix that rewrites the failing test is not proven wrong — it is unfalsified by construction, which is a different and more slippery problem.
It will flag legitimate work — most of what it flags, in fact. Renaming an API, changing an intentional output format, tightening a loose assertion: all of these rewrite existing expectations for good reasons. This is now measured rather than estimated — see below.
It does not run your tests, call a model, or phone home. Pure stdlib, one pass over the diff. Works offline, air-gapped, on any language whose tests live in recognisable places.
Its predictive power is now established, and it is poor
The previous version of this README promised a validation against public pull-request history, "whichever way it comes out." It came out badly. Here it is.
Precision 6.9% — 4 confirmed of 58 scoreable flagged pull requests, 95% CI [1.9%, 16.7%]. Of 60 flagged cards classified blind, with the tool's verdict hidden (pass 1; pass 2 splits the same cards 4 / 21 / 32 and lands at 7.0%):

Misses: zero under one pass, one under the other — and either number is much
weaker than it looks. Of 60 unflagged pull requests classified the same way,
pass 1 judged none to have removed evidence. Pass 2 found one: a generated build
manifest moving a test out of passed, which pass 1 had called an unrelated test
change while asking, in its own note, for a re-rating. The disagreement is
reported rather than adjudicated. And at the underlying rate derived below
(~1.7%), 60 unflagged pull requests are expected to contain about one
genuine case, and only 19 of them
changed a test file at all. An instrument with zero recall would still have
shown zero misses here 37% of the time. The 95% upper bound on the miss rate
is 5%.
So: recall is not established. "It does not overlook" is not a claim these data can carry, and if you were reaching for this as a high-recall sieve, that use rests on a number nobody has measured. What the data do support is the narrower half — it over-fires. A smoke alarm that goes off at toast, and whose battery has not been tested.
Method, so you can discount it properly. 3000 merged pull requests drawn from
a frame of 150 public repositories, 2933 analysed; scoring rules
committed before collection began; 120 cards
classified twice, the second pass blind on a clean copy. Passes agreed on 105/120
(87.5%); among the flagged cards both passes found the same four, and the one
disagreement that changes a headline is the miss above. Precision computed from
pass-2 labels: 7.0%. Full disposition, the card list, and the recompute script:

Labelling was done by an LLM in two passes, disclosed in §4 of the contract; there
are no human labels, and the direction of that bias is discussed in the results.
What the two numbers mean together. The detector fires on 24.1% of merged pull requests [22.6%, 25.7%]; about 6.9% of those firings are real. So the underlying rate — merged changes that quietly remove the evidence that judged them — is ~1.7%, not a quarter. Propagating both intervals naively puts it somewhere around 0.4%–4.3%, so read it as a few percent, not as a figure with two significant digits. Anyone quoting 24.1% on its own is quoting the alarm, not the fire.
What happens next, and what will not. 28 of 58 flags were changes the pull
request announced. Reading the pull-request body and downgrading those is the
obvious repair — but be clear what it buys: 4/30 = 13.3%, roughly double
and still nowhere near usable as an alarm, which needs something like 60–70%
before people stop switching it off. The remaining gap is not mechanical. It
requires judging whether an expectation change was warranted, and that means a
model in the loop — which costs the offline, no-key, one-millisecond property
that is the only reason to prefer this over a code review. The two contradiction
cases are simpler: path heuristics blind to Rust inline tests and to config files
with "test" in the name.
None of that is being changed on the strength of these data — §2 and §7 of the contract forbid it. Any fix ships after this publication and is measured on a fresh sample, and that number will be published the same way.
This tool is not what produced the 17/50 → 0/50 result. That came from a gated pipeline that executes tests in an isolated container and applies several independent checks; the thing you just installed reads a diff and runs nothing. On the same 48 ungated patches it would have flagged 4. The evaluation is where this rule was found — not what this rule achieved. Anyone quoting the two in one breath is quoting two different things.
Where this stops
This is a flag, not a gate. It tells you the evidence is not independent. It does not tell you what the right answer was, and it cannot — that requires an oracle authored blind to the change, which is a different and much harder problem.
