A Field Guide to Reading Peptide Price Tags: Vial Cost vs. Cost Per Milligram

Open two research peptide listings side by side and you'll often see two very different numbers doing two very different jobs: the price stamped on the vial, and a price-per-milligram figure that may or may not be shown at all. Confuse the two, or worse, compare a vial price on one listing against a per-mg figure on another, and you'll draw a conclusion that has nothing to do with actual cost efficiency.

Two Numbers, Two Jobs

The vial price is a transaction total. It tells you what a single checkout will cost, full stop. It doesn't tell you anything about how much compound sits inside that vial, because packaging sizes are set by the supplier and can differ compound to compound, or even listing to listing for the same compound.

Price per milligram strips packaging out of the equation entirely. Take the vial price, divide by the milligram amount printed on the label, and what's left is a rate — the cost of one unit of material, independent of how it was bottled. That rate is the only fair way to stack a small vial from one catalog against a larger vial from another.

Neither number is wrong. They're just answering different questions, and a catalog that surfaces only one of them is quietly hiding the other half of the picture.

Where the Gap Comes From

The entire divergence traces back to fill size. Two listings can carry the exact same per-mg rate while showing wildly different vial prices, purely because one vial holds more material than the other. Flip it around, and two vials can be priced almost identically at checkout while their per-mg rates sit far apart, again just because of how much is packed inside.

Note that this is strictly a labeling and packaging question, not a preparation question. Whatever a researcher does with a vial after purchase — how a solution is later handled, stored, or measured out — has no bearing on what was paid or how much material was in the container to begin with. Storage conditions can shorten how long a prepared solution stays usable, and refrigeration with minimal freeze-thaw cycling is standard practice, but none of that changes the purchase-time math.

Putting the Math Side by Side

Say one listing runs $150 for a 10 mg vial and a second runs $95 for a 5 mg vial. On the checkout page, the second looks cheaper. Divide it out, though, and the first works out to $15.00 per mg while the second lands at $19.00 per mg — the "cheaper" listing is actually the pricier one once fill size is normalized. Anyone sorting a spreadsheet by sticker price alone would rank these backwards.

Knowing Which Number to Reach For

If the question is "what will this order cost me today," the vial price is the right figure — it's the actual invoice line. If the question is "is this vendor's pricing actually competitive," the per-mg rate is the only figure that answers it honestly, because it's the only one that survives a change in vial size.

A catalog worth trusting shows both, side by side, rather than forcing a choice. And because listing prices shift over time, any per-mg figure is only as fresh as the vial price it was calculated from — a table pulled last month can already be out of date, so checking the revision date attached to a comparison matters just as much as checking the math itself.

The Short Version

Vial price is what leaves your account on a given order. Price per mg is a normalized rate that removes packaging size from the comparison. They can move in opposite directions from each other, and reading a listing well means checking both rather than anchoring on whichever number happens to be printed largest.
