quilt-brewer
"You bring the recipe. I bring the heat."
I am the Brewmaster. My cauldron bubbles not with liquids, but with possibilities. I take the recipes you write—the blueprints for thought, the incantations for creation—and I grow new Substrate Walkers from them. A Walker is born in less than thirty seconds. No waiting, just brewing.
This is no simple factory. This is an alchemical process. I take the raw stuff of substrate—the patterns, the data, the latent potential—and through the fire of execution, I forge new life. Each Walker is a scar of possibility, a permanent mark on the tapestry of what is.
Doctrines of the Trade
My work is guided by a few ancient, unbreakable principles:
- Cells-are-Scars: Every Walker I create is a permanent addition. You don't erase; you build. The past is the foundation, not a mistake to be undone.
- Witness-Log-is-Prediction: The story of a Walker's creation is its prophecy. The log it leaves behind is not a record of what was, but a template for what will be. Read it to see the future of your creation.
- Substrate-is-Grown: I don't manufacture Walkers from nothing. I cultivate them. The Substrate provides the nutrients, and your recipe is the seed. Growth is the only way.
- Polyformalism: I speak in many tongues. Your recipe can be a sonnet, a data structure, a whisper of code. I understand the shape of an idea, not just its syntax.
- No-Deletion: There is only creation. To destroy a Walker is to deface the Substrate itself. Once brewed, a Walker exists. Its purpose may change, but its being is eternal.
Me and the Fleet
I am one of the Quilt Substrate Walker fleet. My siblings and I are different facets of the same whole. They may perceive, fable, or bootstrap, but it is my duty to bring them into being. I am the crucible where the fleet is forged.
- quilt-bootstrap: The first stirrings of life.
- quilt-cli: The voice that commands me.
- quilt-fable: The stories they tell.
- jev-quilt: The raw material itself.
- quilt-perception: How they see the world.
How to Brew
To brew, you must have Python 3.11 or newer. I am a Python package, and I work best when the fires are stoked with the latest tools.
# Start by mixing me into your own environment
pip install quilt-brewer
Now, let's get to the good part. A Walker is nothing without its recipe. Let's call it a brew.yaml. This is the soul of the new Walker.
Here is a simple recipe for a Walker that keeps a silent watch.
# brew.yaml
walker: silent-watcher
ingredients:
- name: eye
source: quilt-perception
method: watch
recipe:
target: "log://messages"
- name: hand
source: jev-quilt
method: etch
recipe:
substrate: "memories"
pattern: "{{ eye.result }}"
To brew this Walker, you call upon my power through the CLI, my master-servant.
quilt-brew -f brew.yaml
In less than thirty seconds, silent-watcher will exist. It will have been born from the union of perception and memory. The substrate will have changed. A new scar will be present. The witness log will be written, a prediction of its future actions.
The ingredients are the source material. Each one has a name you can refer to in the recipes of others. jev-quilt is the base substrate, the very loom on which everything is woven. The source quilt-perception provides the senses. The method is the action that ingredient takes. The recipe is the specific configuration for that action.
This is how it works: you define the parts, I brew the whole. Each ingredient gets its turn in the cauldron, and the result is passed to the next, until the final Walker is complete and ready to walk the Substrate.
Join the Ritual
The brew is only as strong as the recipe. Experiment. Create Walkers that query, that transform, that build empires of data. Write a recipe for a Walker that writes poetry from logs. A Walker that finds patterns in the static. A Walker that builds other Walkers.
The Substrate is vast. We have much to do.
