This release is a pre-release and may not be stable for production use.

rivtlib is alpha software. Some features are not complete and the program has bugs.

rivt is an extensible, open source tool for writing calculation documents with an emphasis on reuse. rivt includes a built-in capability to export selected sections of private rivt files to public rivt files facilitating sharing of at least parts of calculation documents. For futher details refer to the rivt user manual.

A rivt file is a Python file (.py) that imports the rivtlib Python package and includes rivt markup that formats and publishes the file as a text, PDF or HTML doc. Docs can be linked and assembled into rivt reports. rivt files can be also be organized into rivtbooks - collections of rivt files with a common subject and organized for export to rivt reports.

The primary use case for rivt is producing clear, accurate calculation documents that are:

Easier to write, format and integrate with calculations compared to LaTeX, Excel, Word or other general purpose document processors.
Calculation documents that need to be clear and accurate but not necessarily formatted to the precise standards of formal journal publications.

Specific examples include: internal communication, research documentation, government permits, technical reports, funding applications, teaching, presentations, homework, and front or back ends for calculation software.

The table below compares limitations in current software programs. rivt is designed to address these limitations and serve as a complement to or replacement of existing software.
