What is Steward?

Every initiative begins with a shared intent.

Over time, that intent is interpreted, refined, implemented and revisited by many people — and increasingly by AI.

Without a shared understanding of what has been agreed, initiatives drift. Decisions are forgotten. Context is lost. The final outcome no longer reflects the original intent.

Steward exists to prevent that drift.

Steward is an open-source initiative that enables trustworthy collaboration between people and AI by transforming collaborative intent into faithful outcomes.

Rather than replacing human judgement, Steward helps preserve it throughout the lifecycle of an initiative by capturing agreements, preserving context and continuously verifying that outcomes remain faithful to the shared understanding collaboratively built by people and AI.

Steward is not another autonomous agent.

It is not another orchestration framework.

It is a disciplined approach to building complex initiatives where people and AI collaborate with a shared understanding of objectives, constraints and responsibilities.

Why "Steward"?

The name has two complementary meanings.

A steward serves

A steward exists to care for something that belongs to someone else.

A steward understands the objectives, protects the interests of those who entrusted the work and helps ensure that every action remains faithful to the intended outcome.

Steward applies this philosophy to Artificial Intelligence.

People define the intent.

People establish the constraints.

People remain accountable for decisions.

AI contributes its capabilities — reasoning, exploration, automation and analysis — but always in service of human intent.

The objective is not autonomous AI.

The objective is trustworthy collaboration.

A stew takes time

The name also evokes the idea of a stew.

Great outcomes rarely emerge from a single brilliant idea or a single prompt.

They are patiently built by combining many ingredients:

• decisions
• constraints
• tools
• AI capabilities
• continuous refinement

Just as a good stew develops through a careful process rather than a single action, successful initiatives emerge through continuous alignment rather than isolated execution.

Steward embraces this philosophy.

Current Status

Steward is in active development.

The project is currently in its foundation phase, establishing the governance model, architectural principles and development infrastructure that all future work depends on.

Contributing

Steward is designed as a long-term project.

Contributions should prioritise architectural consistency, explicit responsibilities and simplicity. Every significant architectural change is governed through the Decision Request and Decision Record process in docs/decisions/.
