SystemAIR-API

A Python library for communicating with and controlling Systemair ventilation units through the Systemair Home Solutions API.

Overview

SystemAIR-API allows you to connect to your Systemair ventilation units, retrieve status information, and control various functions such as ventilation modes, airflow levels, and temperature settings. The library provides a clean interface for interacting with your Systemair units programmatically, making it ideal for home automation systems, custom monitoring solutions, or integration with other smart home platforms.

Installation

From PyPI (Recommended)

pip install systemair-api

From Source

git clone https://github.com/promises/SystemAIR-API.git
cd SystemAIR-API
pip install -e .

For development, install with development dependencies:

pip install -e ".[dev]"

You can run the module directly after installation:

Requirements

  • Python 3.7+
  • requests
  • websocket-client
  • beautifulsoup4
  • python-dotenv

All dependencies are listed in the requirements.txt file.

Usage

Authentication

First, authenticate with your Systemair account credentials:

authenticator = SystemairAuthenticator('your.email@example.com', 'your_password')
access_token = authenticator.authenticate()

# The authenticator handles token expiry and refresh
if not authenticator.is_token_valid():
    access_token = authenticator.refresh_access_token()

API Interaction

Use the SystemairAPI class to interact with the Systemair API:

Real-time Updates with WebSocket

Using the VentilationUnit Class

The VentilationUnit class provides a convenient interface for managing units:

Security

To keep your credentials secure, use environment variables rather than hardcoding them:

Testing

The project includes a comprehensive test suite with over 85% code coverage. To run the tests:

# Run a specific test file

Troubleshooting

API Connection Issues

If you're experiencing connection issues with the API, you can use the diagnostic scripts to help identify the problem:

# Run the debug_api.py script to test basic connectivity
python debug_api.py

# Check the log files for detailed error information
cat systemair_debug.log
cat debug_api.log

Common issues and solutions:

  1. Authentication Fails:

    • Verify your email and password are correct
    • Check that you can log in to the Systemair Home Solutions website directly
    • Look for "Authentication failed" messages in the logs
  2. No Devices Found:

    • Verify your account has registered devices in the Systemair Home Solutions portal
    • Check if the API is returning the expected device list structure
  3. Device Status Updates Fail:

    • Check device-specific errors in the logs
    • Ensure your device ID format matches what's expected by the API
    • Verify the device is online in the Systemair Home Solutions portal

WebSocket Connection Issues

If WebSocket updates are not appearing:

  • WebSocket connections can sometimes be blocked by firewalls or network restrictions
  • Try the test_websocket_connection test in tests/test_api_connect.py
  • Check if your network blocks WebSocket connections (especially on corporate networks)

For a more thorough check of the API connection, you can run:

# Create a detailed connection test report
pytest tests/test_api_connect.py -v > connection_report.txt

This will create a report showing the steps of authentication, device discovery, and status retrieval.

Home Assistant Integration

This library includes a native Home Assistant integration that allows you to add your Systemair ventilation units to your Home Assistant instance. The integration provides:

  • Climate entities for temperature control
  • Fan entities for airflow control
  • Sensor entities for temperatures, humidity, and air quality
  • Binary sensor entities for alarms and status indicators
  • Services for controlling ventilation modes and settings

Installation

  1. Copy the custom_components/systemair directory to your Home Assistant custom_components directory
  2. Restart Home Assistant
  3. Add the integration through the Home Assistant UI: Settings > Devices & Services > Add Integration > Systemair
  4. Enter your Systemair Home Solutions account credentials
