Installation

Method 1: Manual Installation

1. Copy the entire thonny_openai_gpt directory to one of the following locations:

   • ~/.thonny/plugins/ (user-specific installation)
   • Under Lib/site-packages/ in the Thonny installation directory (global installation)

2. Restart Thonny IDE, the plugin will load automatically

Method 2: Install from PyPI (Recommended)

1. In Thonny's Tools menu -> Manage packages, search for "thonny-openai-gpt" and install

Usage

1. After installation, you can find the "GPT Chat" sidebar in the "View" menu
2. You can also find the "GPT Assistant (Dialog)" option in the "Tools" menu
3. The first time you use it, you need to set your OpenAI API key and restart Thonny

Setting up API Key

1. In the GPT chat sidebar, click the ⚙️ button in the top right corner
2. Enter your OpenAI API key
3. The key will be encrypted and stored in the local configuration file

How to Get an OpenAI API Key

1. Go to the OpenAI API website
2. Register or log in to your OpenAI account
3. Click the "Profile" icon in the upper right corner and select "View API keys"
4. Click the "Create new secret key" button
5. Name your key, then click "Create secret key"
6. Copy the generated API key (note that you can only view it once)
7. Paste this key into the settings of the Thonny OpenAI GPT Assistant Plugin

Note: The OpenAI API is a paid service, and you need to set up a payment method on the OpenAI platform. New users may receive a certain amount of free usage credits.
