A lightweight Python library for Unicode text processing, including punctuation detection, punctuation removal, and CJK character detection.

Features

Installation

pip install uni-text

Quick Start

Check if a character is punctuation

from uni_text import UniText

# Check if a character is punctuation
is_punc = UniText.is_punctuation(",")  # True
is_punc = UniText.is_punctuation("a")  # False

Remove punctuation from text

from uni_text import UniText

# Remove punctuation (preserves functional punctuation like contractions, possessives, %, -, decimals, dates)
text = "Hello, world! Don't worry. John's book is here."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "Hello world Don't worry John's book is here"

# Decimal points in numbers are preserved
text = "价格是 99.5 元,很便宜。"
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "价格是 99.5 元很便宜"

# But sentence-ending periods are removed
text = "This is a sentence. Another one."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "This is a sentence Another one"

# Date and fraction slashes are preserved
text = "Date: 2024/01/01. Fraction: 1/2."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "Date: 2024/01/01 Fraction: 1/2"

Remove consecutive punctuation

from uni_text import UniText

# Remove consecutive punctuation marks, keeping only the first
text = "你好,,,世界"
cleaned = UniText.remove_consecutive_punctuations(text)
# Result: "你好,世界"

Check if a code point is CJK character

from uni_text import UniText

# Check if a Unicode code point is a CJK character
code_point = ord("中")
is_cjk = UniText.is_cjk_character(code_point)  # True

code_point = ord("A")

Check if text ends with sentence-ending punctuation

from uni_text import UniText

is_end = UniText.is_sentence_end_with_punctuation(text, "zh")  # True

API Reference

UniText

Main utility class for Unicode text processing. All methods are static.

UniText.is_punctuation(char)

Check if a character is a punctuation mark.

Parameters:

  • char (str): Character to check (must be a single character).

Returns:

  • bool: True if the character is punctuation, False otherwise.

Example:

from uni_text import UniText

is_punc = UniText.is_punctuation(",")  # True
is_punc = UniText.is_punctuation("a")  # False

UniText.remove_punctuations(text)

Remove punctuation marks from text.

Uses Unicode category to remove punctuation, but preserves the following special cases:

  • Apostrophes (') in English contractions and possessives, e.g., "don't", "John's", "workers'"
  • Percent signs (%)
  • Hyphens/dashes (-)
  • Decimal points (.) when used in numbers, e.g., "99.5", "3.14", ".5"
  • Slashes (/) when used in dates, fractions, or units, e.g., "2024/01/01", "1/2", "km/h"

The method intelligently detects these functional punctuation marks by checking their context (e.g., surrounded by digits or letters).

Parameters:

  • text (str): Original text (may contain punctuation).

Returns:

  • str: Text with punctuation removed (special characters preserved).

Examples:

# Basic punctuation removal
text = "Hello, world! Don't worry - it's 100% safe."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "Hello world Don't worry - it's 100% safe"

# Decimal points in numbers are preserved
text = "价格是 99.5 元,很便宜。"
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "价格是 99.5 元很便宜"

# Sentence-ending periods are removed
text = "This is a sentence. Another one."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "This is a sentence Another one"

# Decimal at end of number is preserved
text = "The value is 5."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "The value is 5"

# Slashes in dates/fractions are preserved
text = "Date: 2024/01/01. Fraction: 1/2."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "Date: 2024/01/01 Fraction: 1/2"

# Possessives are preserved
text = "John's book is here."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "John's book is here"

# Plural possessives are preserved
text = "The workers' rights are important."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "The workers' rights are important"

# Decimal points at start of number are preserved
text = "The value is .5, not 5."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "The value is .5 not 5"

# Slashes in units are preserved
text = "Speed: 100 km/h. Ratio: 1/2."
cleaned = UniText.remove_punctuations(text)
# Result: "Speed: 100 km/h Ratio: 1/2"

UniText.remove_consecutive_punctuations(text)

Remove consecutive punctuation marks, keeping only the first one.

When consecutive punctuation marks are encountered (regardless of whether they are the same), only the first one is kept, and all subsequent consecutive punctuation marks are removed.

Parameters:

  • text (str): Original text (may contain repeated punctuation).

Returns:

  • str: Text with consecutive punctuation removed.

Examples:

from uni_text import UniText

# Same punctuation repeated
text = "你好,,,世界"
cleaned = UniText.remove_consecutive_punctuations(text)
# Result: "你好,世界"

# Different punctuation marks
text = "测试!?。结束"
cleaned = UniText.remove_consecutive_punctuations(text)
# Result: "测试!结束"

UniText.is_cjk_character(code_point)

Check if a Unicode code point is a CJK character.

CJK character ranges include:

  • CJK Unified Ideographs: 0x4E00-0x9FFF
  • CJK Extension A: 0x3400-0x4DBF
  • CJK Extension B-I: 0x20000-0x323AF, 0x2EBF0-0x2EE5F (includes Extensions B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I)
  • CJK Compatibility Ideographs: 0xF900-0xFAFF
  • CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement: 0x2F800-0x2FA1F
  • Hiragana: 0x3040-0x309F
  • Katakana: 0x30A0-0x30FF
  • Hangul Syllables: 0xAC00-0xD7AF
  • Bopomofo (Zhuyin): 0x3100-0x312F

Parameters:

  • code_point (int): Unicode code point (integer).

Returns:

  • bool: True if the code point is a CJK character, False otherwise.

Example:

from uni_text import UniText

# Chinese character
code_point = ord("中")
is_cjk = UniText.is_cjk_character(code_point)  # True

# Japanese hiragana
code_point = ord("あ")
is_cjk = UniText.is_cjk_character(code_point)  # True

# Korean character
code_point = ord("한")
is_cjk = UniText.is_cjk_character(code_point)  # True

# Latin character
code_point = ord("A")
is_cjk = UniText.is_cjk_character(code_point)  # False

UniText.is_sentence_end_with_punctuation(text, lang)

Check if text ends with sentence-ending punctuation based on language type.

Calls the corresponding language-specific method to check if the text ends with sentence-ending punctuation. Supported language types: 'zh' (Chinese), 'en' (English), 'ja' (Japanese), 'ko' (Korean).

Can be used to check if a Word's word field (e.g., "段。", "end.") ends with sentence-ending punctuation.

Parameters:

  • text (str): Text to check (can be a single character or multiple characters, e.g., "段。", "end.").
  • lang (str): Language type, supports 'zh', 'en', 'ja', 'ko'.

Returns:

  • bool: True if text ends with sentence-ending punctuation, False otherwise.

Raises:

  • ValueError: If lang parameter is not a supported language type.

Examples:

# Chinese sentence-ending punctuation
text = "这是一段文字。"
is_end = UniText.is_sentence_end_with_punctuation(text, "zh")  # True

text = "这是问题?"

Class Constants

The UniText class provides the following constants for sentence-ending punctuation sets:

  • UniText.SENTENCE_END_PUNCTUATIONS_ZH: Chinese sentence-ending punctuation set
  • UniText.SENTENCE_END_PUNCTUATIONS_EN: English sentence-ending punctuation set
  • UniText.SENTENCE_END_PUNCTUATIONS_JA: Japanese sentence-ending punctuation set
  • UniText.SENTENCE_END_PUNCTUATIONS_KO: Korean sentence-ending punctuation set

These constants are sets containing the punctuation marks that are considered sentence-ending for each language. They can be accessed directly if needed for custom logic.

Requirements

  • Python >= 3.10

No external dependencies required. This package uses only Python standard library modules (unicodedata).
