High-performance Excel writer with automatic type detection. Written in Rust, usable from Python.

xlsxturbo is built for Python users who need fast .xlsx exports without giving up common Excel features. It focuses on DataFrame and CSV export, uses Rust for the hot path, and keeps the Python API small enough to use directly in scripts, reports, and batch jobs.

Global Column Width Cap

Use column_widths={'_all': value} to cap all columns at a maximum width:

When autofit=True is combined with column_widths that names specific columns and has no '_all' key, the named columns get their explicit widths and every other column is autofitted to its content. Add '_all' back in to cap the autofitted columns instead of leaving them uncapped.

Note: Unknown keys (e.g. 'color' instead of 'font_color') and wrong value types raise an error listing the valid options. Applies to header_format, column_formats, conditional_formats[...]['format'], images, validations, textboxes, charts, sparklines, and rich_text segment formats.

rich_text segments accept font-level keys only (bold, italic, underline, font_color, bg_color, font_size). A segment is an inline run inside one cell, so cell-level keys — borders, align_horizontal/align_vertical, wrap_text — would never render and are rejected rather than silently ignored. Format the cell itself via column_formats or cells instead.

Column patterns in column_formats, conditional_formats, and validations must match at least one DataFrame column. A zero-match exact name or wildcard raises ValueError instead of silently omitting the requested behavior.

Column Formatting

Apply formatting to data columns using pattern matching. Unknown keys raise errors (see Header Styling).

Formula Columns

Add calculated columns to your Excel output. Formulas are written after data columns and use {row} as a placeholder for the row number:

Formula columns appear after data columns (A=price, B=quantity, C=tax_rate, D=Subtotal, E=Tax, F=Total).

Notes:

  • {row} is replaced with the Excel row number (1-based, starting at 2 for data rows when header=True)
  • Formula columns inherit header formatting if specified
  • Column order is preserved (first formula = first new column)
  • Works with both df_to_xlsx and dfs_to_xlsx (global or per-sheet)
  • Combined with table_style, formula columns sit outside the Excel table: the table covers the DataFrame columns only, so formula columns get no banded fill, no autofilter dropdown, and are not covered by column_widths/autofit. Add the calculated column to the DataFrame instead if you need it inside the table.

Merged Cells

Merge cell ranges to create headers, titles, or grouped labels:

Merged range format:

  • Tuple of (range, text) or (range, text, format_dict)
  • Range uses Excel notation: 'A1:D1', 'B3:B10', etc.

  • Merged cells are applied after data is written, so plan row positions accordingly
  • When using with header=True, data starts at row 2 (Excel row 2)

Hyperlink format:

  • Tuple of (cell, url) or (cell, url, display_text)
  • Cell uses Excel notation: 'A1', 'B5', etc.
  • Display text is optional; if omitted, the URL is shown

  • Hyperlinks write to the specified cell position (overwrites existing content)
  • To add a "links column", target cells beyond your DataFrame columns (as shown above)

Optional message options:

  • input_title, input_message: Prompt shown when cell is selected
  • error_title, error_message: Message shown when invalid data is entered

Notes:

  • Validations apply to the data rows of the specified column
  • Column patterns work: 'score_*': {...} matches all columns starting with score_
  • If only min or only max is specified, the other defaults to the type's extreme value
  • whole_number min/max are bounded to the i32 range (-2147483648 to 2147483647); a value outside that range raises ValueError naming the field and range
  • List validation values are limited to 255 total characters (Excel limitation)
  • Works with both df_to_xlsx and dfs_to_xlsx (global or per-sheet)
  • Not available in constant memory mode

Sparklines

Add sparklines - mini charts that live inside a single cell - to show trends next to your data. The dict key is the sparkline location: a single cell (e.g. 'D2') places one sparkline, while a range (e.g. 'D2:D10') places a grouped sparkline, one per row of the data range. The range key (the data to plot) is required and must be sheet-qualified (e.g. 'Sheet1!A2:C10'), like chart ranges.

Formula Injection

CSV and DataFrame string values are always written as literal string cells, never as formulas. A value starting with =, +, -, or @ is stored as-is and does not execute in Excel. The only ways to produce a live formula are the explicit formula_columns option and the hyperlinks option; nothing else in xlsxturbo interprets cell content as a formula.

  • -s, --sheet-name <NAME>: Name of the Excel sheet (default: "Sheet1")
  • -d, --date-order <ORDER>: Date parsing order for ambiguous dates (default: "auto")
    • auto: ISO first, then European, then US
    • mdy or us: US format (01-02-2024 = January 2)
    • dmy or eu: European format (01-02-2024 = February 1)
  • -p, --parallel: Use multi-core CSV processing (faster for large files, uses more memory)
  • -v, --verbose: Show progress information

Performance

Reference benchmark on 100,000 rows x 50 columns with mixed data types. Your results will vary by system - run the benchmark yourself (see Benchmarking).

All libraries use default settings; outputs differ in styling (e.g. polars auto-sizes columns and bolds headers by default, while xlsxturbo writes bare cells unless asked).

Supported date formats: YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY/MM/DD, DD-MM-YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY

DataFrame columns follow the same mapping, with one addition worth knowing: durations (pandas.Timedelta / numpy.timedelta64) are written as text, e.g. 86400 seconds. Excel has no duration type — convert to a number in the unit you want first (df["elapsed"].dt.total_seconds()) and apply a num_format such as [h]:mm:ss if you want it displayed as a duration.

Output File Safety

Writes are atomic: the workbook is built in a temporary file alongside the destination and renamed over it only once it is complete. If a write fails for any reason — an invalid chart range, a full disk, a dropped network share — the file already at the output path is left exactly as it was, rather than being truncated. Re-exporting over yesterday's report can therefore never leave you with neither.

Because the staging file is created in the destination's directory, that directory must exist and be writable. When an existing file is replaced, its permissions are preserved.

Known Limitations

  • Datetime display precision: Sub-second precision is preserved in the stored Excel datetime serial, but the default display format shows whole seconds.
  • Timezone-aware datetimes: Written as their local wall-clock value; the UTC offset is not preserved (Excel has no timezone concept). A 2024-01-01 12:00 US/Eastern value is stored as 12:00, not converted to UTC. Normalize to UTC beforehand (e.g. df["ts"].dt.tz_convert("UTC").dt.tz_localize(None)) if you need UTC.
  • Large integers: Integers exceeding 2^53 (9,007,199,254,740,992) are written as strings to prevent silent precision loss in Excel's floating-point representation.
  • Validation lists: Limited to 255 total characters (Excel limitation).
  • Append mode: Existing workbook mutation is not supported because the Rust writer is write-only. Create a new workbook instead.
