myGeeKy
Find friends · collaborate · away from noise.
Your corner of GitHub, for research: the people, projects, papers and pulse of your field,
found from your CV, repos, ORCID and Google Scholar, in one small glass panel on your screen.
For researchers who build things at a computer.
💻 computer scientists and developers · 🧬 bioinformaticians and data scientists ·
📊 experimental researchers analysing their own data
Code, data, statistics, figures and pipelines. Never laboratory protocols or bench instructions:
why.

Why this exists: I don't have Facebook. I wanted a real circle in my field: people I can genuinely learn from (and who might learn something from me), projects where my work would be welcome, and a feel for where the field is moving. GitHub has all of that, but scattered and buried under famous accounts. myGeeKy gathers it in one place, away from the noise, and never acts for you. Find friends who work on what you work on. Collaborate on projects that welcome you. Do it away from noise: no feed to scroll, no likes, no posting, nothing that follows or stars for you. |
🚀 Get started in 3 steps
▶ Watch the video: install, set up, and a tour of the panel
🪟 Windows: one installer
You don't need anything installed first. It sets up Python and Git if they're missing (just for you, no admin rights), asks who you are, checks your tokens, connects private sync, and adds a Start-menu shortcut. Windows may say "Windows protected your PC" (the installer isn't code-signed yet): click More info → Run anyway. |
🐧 Linux · macOS: one linecurl -fsSL https://mygeeky.org/install.sh | sh
It installs myGeeKy in its own folder (no sudo, no clash with conda or your system Python), adds it to your applications menu (on a Mac: Applications, so it's in Launchpad and Spotlight), then asks: set up in a window (the same as Windows: Next → Next → Finish, with Sign in with GitHub) or right there in the terminal. Run it again to update. More for Macs below. 🐍 Or with pip, anywherepip install mygeeky
mygeeky init # who you are, then Sign in with GitHub
mygeeky gui # open the panel (mygeeky setup opens the setup window instead)
Only your GitHub username is required. Your CV, ORCID and Google Scholar profile are optional, and they make every match much better.
|
Then, any time, from the panel or the terminal:
mygeeky run # 👥 people in your field worth following
mygeeky contribute # 🛠️ repos you could improve
mygeeky market # 📈 what's rising in your field
mygeeky trends # 🔬 papers and tools gaining traction
mygeeky news # 🗞️ news about your interests
mygeeky beacon init # 🙏 join Signals (optional)
🍎 On a Mac
- One line:
curl -fsSL https://mygeeky.org/install.sh | sh. It uses Homebrew's Python (brew install python), the python.org one, or macOS's own (afterxcode-select --install), and puts myGeeKy.app in~/Applications: open it from Launchpad, Spotlight or the Dock. - With uv:
uv tool install mygeeky --with PySide6-Essentials, thenmygeeky setup. Update withuv tool upgrade mygeeky(the panel's Update button does that for you). - Your tokens live in the macOS Keychain (look for "mygeeky" in Keychain Access), never in a file.
- At login and every Monday: tick them at the end of setup, or run
mygeeky desktop install --autostartandmygeeky schedule install --yes. Both are small launchd agents in~/Library/LaunchAgents. - Uninstall: ⚙ → Uninstall… in the panel, or
mygeeky uninstall. It removes the app, the login item, the weekly run and the package. Your data stays unless you choose to erase it too.
More in the guide.
🔑 Two tokens, two jobs
myGeeKy uses two separate GitHub tokens with very different powers. Setup checks what each token can actually do (with tests that change nothing on GitHub), and refuses a token that doesn't fit its job.
| 🔍 Token 1: read-only | ✍️ Token 2: Signals (optional) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it's for | Reading public profiles, repos and followers | Writing your mygeeky-beacon repo, and nothing else |
| Repository access | Public repositories | Only select repositories → mygeeky-beacon |
| Permissions | Account → Followers: Read-only | Repository → Contents: Read and write |
| Refused if… | it can write to any repo, can follow people, or is your Signals token | it can't write to mygeeky-beacon, or is token 1 again |
| Made with | new fine-grained token ↗ | the same page, after the repo exists |
Both live only in your OS keyring (Windows Credential Locker / macOS Keychain / Secret Service), never in a file.
myGeeKy reminds you a week before either one expires, and mygeeky auth status shows what each can do.
🪟 Every tab
Folded, it's just a small icon on your screen edge that now and then lets out a few floating hearts (turn them off in ⚙).
🌱 Grow, and 🎯 Chances
Two planets for what comes next in your career. Everything in them is matched to you on your own device; your 👍 and 👎 teach your model what to show you more and less of, and never leave your devices.
📈 Rising Skills What's growing in your field and missing from you, with why |
🧭 Protocols A road map for any skill; the step you're on makes room for itself |
🎯 Chances Verified jobs, funding and conferences, gone after the deadline |
🏆 The Quiz tab Every protocol's quiz in one place, with your best score on each |
🏆 A question, answered Why that answer is right, and the source it was written from, with the sentence quoted from it |
🏆 Your score How each level and each step went. Only your best counts, and it stays on your device unless you ask |
🌱 Grow
- 📈 Rising Skills. Skills, tools and methods growing in your field (in the rising papers, trending repos and models, and the people myGeeKy follows for you) that your profile, CV, papers and repos don't show yet. Each one says why: "in 5 repos near your work, 2 trending models; not in your profile yet".
- 🧭 Protocols. A skill as ordered stages, e.g. R for data analysis: R basics → statistics with R → R for data
analysis → a real project to rerun → your own work.
- A level check skips what you already know. Your own repos are the evidence ("6 of your repos use R", which you can overrule); there's also a short quiz, or "I can do these".
- Reviewed protocols are written by myGeeKy's maker: 💻 Git and GitHub for working with others, algorithms and data structures, your first web app, machine learning outside a notebook, your first pull request; 🧬 R and Python for data analysis, GWAS, Nextflow, single-cell RNA-seq; 📊 and for anyone starting to analyse their own data: From Excel to R, statistics for experiments: which test, and why, figures your reviewers won't ask you to redo, images into numbers with Fiji.
- Never laboratory work. myGeeKy doesn't give bench protocols, steps, recipes or troubleshooting, and refuses to build one: a wrong line of R wastes an afternoon, a wrong line at a bench can hurt somebody, and myGeeKy can't review bench safety or know your local rules. Analysing what an experiment produced is welcome — that's what From Excel to R is for.
- For any other skill, myGeeKy builds one. It searches GitHub and papers, and a small model trained for this (about 400 KB, running on your device) sorts what it finds into stages.
- Change it as you like (reorder, rename, add and remove), then 📤 publish it: it goes to the maker as a public GitHub issue you send yourself, so it can become a reviewed protocol for everyone and teach the next model.
- 🏆 Quiz (its own tab in 🌱 Grow). 258 questions across all 14 protocols, ten drawn at random per attempt: half basics, then applied, and
a few real pitfalls ("a band in the no-template control: what's the most likely cause?").
- Every question comes from a source, with the sentence quoted from it, and shows that source once you answer. Code questions are run, and sums (dilutions, master mixes, ΔΔCt) are recomputed, before a question is ever shipped.
- Only your best score counts, one attempt a day, and 🚩 drops a question you think is wrong.
- Nothing goes online unless you ask. If you want your score on
mygeeky.org, you say so in two separate choices (your name, and your scores) and then
write
accepton a GitHub issue from your own account -- that's the proof, andwithdrawundoes it. A score can follow you into a job application, so it's yours to decide; low scores are never shown at all.
- 📚 Learn. Free courses, books, tutorials and repos picked by hand, matched to you and your rising skills.
- 🎉 Wins. New ⭐ stars and 🍴 forks on your repos, and new 📚 citations of your papers, with the newest paper citing you. Checked once a day.
- 🤝 Collaborators. Fellow myGeeKy users whose skills complement yours: they bring what you don't, and you bring what they don't. Asking is the sealed 🤝 signal, which they only ever see if they pick you too.
🎯 Chances
- Verified jobs. PhD places, postdocs, master's places, research jobs and internships, each one checked by hand to be real -- for labs and for software teams.
- Funding and conferences. Grants, fellowships, travel grants and conferences, with who can apply and what students get.
- Each one disappears after its deadline. A 🚩 tells the maker a listing looks fake.
They're curated by hand (how: docs/CURATED.md), and nobody, not even the maker, learns what you looked at.
📱 On your phone
Your world, in orbit: you in the middle, your circle (Live, People, Activity, Signals) on the inner ring and the world (News, Papers, Repos, AI models, Launches) on the outer one, plus 🌱 Grow and 🎯 Chances. Spin a ring with your thumb; the planet that locks into the lens opens above. Tap something to read and the rings fold into a slim dock.
Live: new faces and moves around you |
People: spin to your circle |
Reading: the rings fold away |
You: your model, badges, settings |
Set it up in one scan (⚙ → Connect your phone on the desktop panel), or Sign in with GitHub. For Android, coming to Google Play soon.
🔤 Keywords that mean something
Add AI and myGeeKy also looks for LLMs, deep learning and AI agents; add GWAS and it brings in genomics and statistical genetics. A small model reads which GitHub topics go together across the most-starred repos, and builds a keyword dictionary that every myGeeKy uses.
- 🟢 Green keywords are in the dictionary: they bring their whole meaning to People, Repos, Research and News.
- 🔴 Red ones aren't yet: they still work as plain words, and they're passed on (through your Signals beacon, or with one click as a suggestion) so the next dictionary learns them.
mygeeky keywords add AI "single cell" # or in the panel: Model → 🔤 Your keywords
mygeeky keywords explain gwas # what it brings in, and how strongly
🧠 It learns, and keeps room to explore
|
Everything starts from your research field: topics from your papers (OpenAlex), your Google Scholar interests, and your repos. Then it watches what you actually do:
Interests fade with a 30-day half-life, so it follows you as you change. And 🔭 20% of every list is deliberately kept for fields you've never touched, so you don't end up in a bubble. A separate model learns who follows you back, from your own history, and gets sharper every week. |
The Model tab: you in the middle, your field, what you're into lately, and new territory |
🔒 What it will never do
- Never follows, stars, forks or comments for you. There is no code for it anywhere in the project. You look, you click, you act yourself on github.com.
- No server, no account, no telemetry. It talks only to GitHub and public research APIs (OpenAlex, arXiv, bioRxiv, Hacker News, PyPI).
- Your data stays yours: on your computer, plus (if you choose) a private GitHub repo you own for sync.
- Tokens only in your OS keyring, checked for least privilege, never logged or printed.
Details: Safety.
💡 Ideas, problems and questions
Click 💡 at the top of the panel (or run mygeeky idea "your idea"). Pick Idea, Problem or Question,
and your browser opens a ready-to-send issue in
myGeeKy-ideas. Click Submit to send it. Nothing is sent
until you do, and no token passes through myGeeKy. Issues there are public, so leave out tokens and private data.
Rather write privately, or no GitHub account? Email support@mygeeky.org.
🎓 No GitHub account? Start with ORCID
GitHub is optional, and it is not the smaller half. In setup, on the computer or the phone, Sign in with ORCID (or type your ORCID iD, or a few keywords), and these work straight away for your field: 🎯 Chances (verified jobs, funding, conferences and seasons), 🌱 Grow (rising skills, protocols, the quiz), 📰 News, 📄 Research, 📈 Market and 📦 Repos to improve -- the last two search public repos against your field and never read your account, which is why they need no GitHub.
What does need an account: who'd follow you back (it is scored against your own account), 🕒 Activity (the feed of people you follow), 📡 Signals and 🤝 Collab -- plus syncing to your phone, which travels through your own private GitHub repo. The other half of 👥 People -- researchers found by searching your field -- works without it. Signing in with ORCID only confirms your iD: myGeeKy never sees your ORCID password and keeps no ORCID token.
If myGeeKy hits an error, it saves a crash report on your computer and offers to send it. You see exactly what's in it (tokens, emails, your name and folders already removed), and Report on GitHub opens a prefilled issue that you submit yourself. Nothing is ever sent automatically. How myGeeKy is checked for stability before each release is in stability/PROTOCOL.md.
